This couldn’t have been a better start for the Zags than what we’re seeing here. 3–0 both straight up and against the spread, with notable wins over Oklahoma and Creighton. Gonzaga, given their name-brand recognition and status as a college basketball heavyweight, already commands market favor on most days. Add in this early-season résumé and their stock is through the roof. Against OU and the Jays in particular, the Zags didn’t just win or cover—they dominated, winning by an average margin of 21 points. Meanwhile, Arizona State enters having won two games, but only against paperweights in Utah Tech and Southern Utah. Given that the Sun Devils finished 13–20 last season once they hit conference play, this looks like an easy load-and-win for Gonzaga. They may win indeed—but this is not an easy spot.

This is Gonzaga’s first road game of the year, and they’re laying what is clearly an inflated number in doing so. That alone makes the situation less than auspicious. Arizona State brings two major elements to the table: First – home presence and the 952 Crew out in force to make life difficult for the Zags. They sit top-20 nationally in both field goals made and attempted, meaning they not only shoot often but convert frequently. Add to that a top-15 assist rate (18 per game) and stronger rebounding metrics than Gonzaga, and the picture gets clearer. All of this positions ASU to go shot-for-shot with Gonzaga—creating second chances, sustaining possessions, and generating enough offense to stay well within this number.
