Atlanta Hawks 2019-20 Betting Predictions, Odds, and Expert Best Bets

Best Bet: Atlanta Hawks Over 32.5 Wins -130

Worst Bet: Atlanta Hawks to Win the NBA Championship: (+12500)

The 2018 Atlanta Hawks were a mediocre at best team but they have a lot of young talent on the squad including Trae Young, who will be entering his second season in the NBA after a stellar rookie campaign in which he put up 1,549 points, 301 rebounds, 653 assists, 72 steals and 15 blocks. He will be the centerpiece of the Hawks for the next decade and he looks to be one of the better young players in the NBA.

The Hawks were one of the better teams offensively in the NBA last season, ranking 9th in the NBA in points per game with 113.34, 25.83 assists per game which ranked 8th in the NBA and ranking 4th in offensive rebounds per game with 11.65. Young led the team in scoring and assists. John Collins led the team in offensive rebounds with 219. Both Collins and Young will be back again this season for the Hawks which should lead to them being among the top teams in the NBA once again offensively.

As good as the Hawks were on offense they were equally as bad on defense, mainly because they run an up-tempo offense which also leads to the opponent scoring a lot of points per game. The Hawks ranked last in terms of points allowed per game with 119.37, 18th in defensive rebounds per game with 34.49 and averaged 8.20 steals per game which ranked 11th in the NBA. Collins led the team in rebounds with 376. DeAndre’ Bembry led the team in steals with 105. Dewayne Dedmon led the team in blocks with 71. The Hawks lost Dedmon in free agency to the Kings but will have Collins and Bembry back this season.

Hawks Win Total O/U 32.5 Wins

The Atlanta Hawks finished the 2018 NBA season with 29 wins and Vegas has only given them a 3.5 game improvement in terms of win total for this season. They have young talent and added a few key players in DeAndre Hunter who will help them on defense as well as Allen Crabbe and Cam Reddish, both of whom should help improve what is already one of the top offensive teams. The biggest improvement though will be on defense with the addition of Hunter who should help a team that ranked 18th in defensive rebounds per game last season. The Hawks also play in the weaker of the two conferences in the East and play in a division in the Southeast where they could finish middle of the pack this season. 32.5 wins is not that hard to reach in the NBA and the Hawks showed improvement throughout the season last year, something they should show again this season with a young nucleus of players. The over 32.5 is the right call here as I could see the Hawks pushing towards 40 wins this season.

Odds To Make The Playoffs: Yes +170 No -200

Every year in the NBA there is a surprise team that makes a vast improvement of the previous season. The offseason for the Hawks was one of the better ones as they got help both offensively and defensively through the draft and trades after adding Crabbe through a trade with the Nets and adding Hunter with the 4th pick of the draft. I look for these to improve the team this season both offensively and defensively. The East is still top heavy this season with about 8 teams that will be fight for the 6-8th seed in the East and I look for the Hawks to be one of the teams in contention for one of those spots. With the improvements that the Hawks have made I would put a small wager on them making the playoffs this season.

Odds To Win The Southeast: 7:1

This is really a tossup here as the Hawks are listed as the 3rd best team in the Southeast according to Vegas odds behind both the Heat and the Magic. Orlando who won the division last season didn’t make any big splashes in free agency, but they didn’t lose any key pieces either. The Heat had one of the better offseasons in the NBA which is what is holding me back from selecting the Hawks as the value play in the division. The Hawks have a young nucleus that will be good this season but I don’t see them as having the talent to beat out the Heat for the division title, but I do see them finishing ahead of the Magic in the division this season. If you think the Hawks are a better team than the Heat, then this is an obvious value play but if you are like me, I’d stay away from taking the Hawks to win the division this season.

Odds To Win the Eastern Conference: 40:1

The Hawks are an improved team with young talent but let’s not go overboard here. The Eastern Conference is a top heavy conference with the Celtics, Nets, Raptors and Bucks all being clearly better teams than the Hawks this season which means even if the Hawks do make the playoffs this season, which I think they will, they still likely wouldn’t make it out of the 1st round as they would have to play one of the top four teams in the conference in the 1st round and I don’t think they could beat any of those teams in a playoff series. Taking the Hawks at 40:1 to win the Eastern Conference is lighting money on fire and watching it burn as they won’t even make it to the Conference Finals this season.

Odds To Win The NBA Championship: 125:1

In a few seasons this might be the play to make but as far as this season goes this isn’t a smart move at all. The Hawks are a middle of the road team in the Eastern Conference and a team that will be in the mix for a playoff spot this season, but they aren’t in the top 5 in the conference and definitely aren’t one of the top 12 teams in the NBA. This would be the worst bet to make on the Hawks this season as they don’t have the playoff experience to make it to the NBA Finals let alone with the NBA this season.
