Is Patrick Mahomes the next Tom Brady?

There are many things similar between Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Tom Brady of the New England Patriots. For one they are both starting quarterbacks in the National Football league. For another, they are both in the AFC Conference of the league. But what really makes them close is the fact of how similar their NFL careers began. You have an undervalued and under appreciated quarterback in 2000, who at the lowest point of his career would fall to the New England Patriots with the 199th overall selection. Tom Brady from the University of Michigan, a 6th round pick, was really a nobody. Was he the heir apparent to Drew Bledsoe?

Tom Brady

Tom Brady who saw playing time as a rookie in one game, for New England in the 2000 season, where he only registered one completion for 6 yards. Next thing you know the 2001 season starts and he is thrust into the starting role after Drew Bledsoe got hurt early in the season. Tom Brady became a legend that season. He was no longer the under-appreciated 6th round pick. Brady led the New England Patriots to their first Super Bowl Championship in 2001, in only his second season in the league. Brady passed for 2,843 yards and had 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in his 2nd season in the NFL in 2001.

Patrick Mahomes

Flash forward to the 2017 NFL Draft and the Kansas City Chiefs had the 10th overall pick in the draft after a trade with the Buffalo Bills. Were they thinking along the lines of what New England found in the 6th round in 2000, I don’t know maybe. The Chiefs went with Patrick Mahomes quarterback from Texas Tech. It looked like Mahomes was the Heir apparent to Alex Smith for KC. Like Brady, Mahomes only saw action as a rookie in one game, and that was the last game of the regular season. He showed promise passing for 284 yards and threw an interception. So far in 2018 Patrick’s 2nd season in the NFL he has passed for 1,513 yards and 14 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, and that is just through five games in 2018. He like Brady have become the starting QB. Can he lead the Chiefs to a Super Bowl in 2018?

A Look into the Future

Week 6 of the NFL season is upon us, and with that come a showdown for the ages, as Patrick Mahomes  5-0 Kansas City Chiefs travel to face the Tom Brady led New England Patriots. Will we see Pat Mahomes rise above Brady? Or will Tom Terrific again show why he is the G.O.A.T?

Mahomes may very well be the next Tom Brady, but until he leads his team to the level that Tom Brady has led New England. Eight Super Bowl trips, and five Super Bowl Championships, for Brady, Mahomes has a long way to go, but a great start would be to beat Brady in week 6 in New England.
