What is PointsBet

Originally founded in Australia, PointsBet Launched in the United States in January 2019, and with its unique PointsBetting markets, is becoming one of the fastest growing online sportsbooks in the country.

Points bet specialize in NFL, NBA, and MLB, regularly offering more markets on each game than any of their rival sportsbooks. They don’t just offer odds on these sports with a wealth of sporting action available to bet on from around the world.

Their Unique sales point, however, is their PointsBetting, a type of spread betting not seen elsewhere. It’s a high-risk high-reward form of wagering, where the further beyond the set line it ends, the more you win, and the further below the set line, the more you can lose.

PointsBetting - Spread Betting explained

Points Betting is a new, exciting way to bet where your winnings or losses from a bet are not determined until the very end of a game. The more right you are, the more you win, the more wrong you are, the more you lose.

How does that work then? Well instead of betting on fixed odds for a certain outcome, with PointsBetting you’re betting against a set line or total, risking a stake per unit rather than one preset stake.

For example
If in an NFL game the line has been set at 260 passing yards, if you buy at 260, you will earn winnings for every yard over 260 but will lose your stake for every yard under 260

If you wager $10 on over 260 passing yards and the player throws for 295 yards (35 point win), you’ll earn 35x your stake for a $350 profit. Conversely if in that same game, your player only throws for 345 yards (15 point loss) you’ll lose 15x your stake so in this instance $150.

It’s a higher risk higher reward type of bet, but in the age of Fantasy Sports driven by player statistical bets, it’s an exciting way to wager, with every play until the end of the game.
All markets have a max win and max loss, which is displayed in the bet slip at the time of bet placement so you will always know what your maximum potential winnings will be, as well as what your losses could equate to if your bet goes against you. When you place your wager PointsBet will withhold a certain amount of your balance in case of losses.

Where PointsBet differs and stands out from the crowd, however, is with their offerings beyond the norm, beyond tradition. Their flagship PointsBetting is a type of spread betting not seen to be widely available in the US sports betting industry, offering an exciting high-risk high reward way to wager on a game.

While on a fixed-odds bet you know your win-loss situation when you place the bet, with Points Betting you don’t, the more right you are, the more you win, and therefore, the more wrong, the more you can lose. It offers bettors a chance to tap into their expertise even more than you can with fixed odds.

Along with the PointsBetting, PointsBet specializes in NBA betting offering up to 500 bet types per game including over 100 of which are not offered anywhere else. These markets include the likes of Time of first free throws to be made by players and teams, time of first 3PT FG by teams and players, time of first 2PT FG for teams, and players among many others.

The sheer number and types of markets available to bettors at PointsBet is definitely a strength of theirs, this allows bettors and experts to look beyond the obvious when analyzing a matchup, and you can fully capitalize on that knowledge beyond the realms of fixed-odds with their PointsBetting spread bets.

Betting odds

Fixed Odds

Understanding betting odds is key to long term success with wagering and while possibly daunting at first, understanding betting odds is very simple. PointsBet’s default odds style is American, but you can switch these to suit your preference at the bottom of the navigation panel on the left, below all of the sports, whereby fractional and decimal odds are available.

PointsBet is also well-known for their Booster Odds and Crowd Booster Odds, whereby they offer boosted odds on popular selections with the former, the Crowd Booster Odds unique in that they continue to boost the odds as more people wager on the selection.

American Odds Explained
American style odds can be easily recognized by having either a + or – before the figure, for example, +500 or -240.

A + sign followed by a number shows the amount you would win for a $100 stake so a $100 bet at odds of +500 wins you $500.

A – sign shows how much you’d need to stake in order to win $100, so at -240, you’d need to stake $240 to win $100.

Fractional odds explained
Fractional odds are simple to calculate as the first number is the amount you can expect to win and the second number the amount you’ll need to stake.

If you wanted to place a bet at odds of 9/2 then a $20 wager would see you win $90 in profit so $110 in total.

Decimal odds explained
Likewise, Decimal odds are very simple to calculate, you multiply your stake by the odds to determine your total payout.

A $100 wager at odds of 4.2 can be calculated by multiplying 4.2 x 100 which is $420, for a profit of $320

PointsBetting odds

PointsBetting is a type of wagering with a difference, you are betting on spreads rather than fixed odds, risking a stake per unit rather than one preset stake on preset odds.

For example, if you’re wagering on total points in a game with the line set at 220, you’ll earn 1 unit per point over that total, and lose one unit per point under it.

If you wager $5 per unit and the total hits 245 (+25 from the line) you will win 25x your stake, in this case, $125

By the same rule, if the total comes in as 200 (-20 from the line) you will lose 20x your stake, in this case, $100.

Live in-game betting

In-play betting is an exciting way to have a wager on an event after it has started. It allows you to bet on a number of different markets including Moneyline, Points Totals, Spreads, and Props on all of the top action.

To discover what is currently offering in-play odds, you can either toggle between featured events or in-play events on the PointsBet homepage on both the web and PointsBet mobile app or simply click In-play on the navigation menu on the left-hand side of the page.

As the odds reflect the action, you will notice they’ll change in line with the on-field action, and you may experience a slight delay before bet confirmation, as the odds are locked in.

How to bet a Parlay at PointsBet

Betting a parlay is a great way to have a wager on multiple games and markets. By combining multiple picks into one bet, they all have to win for the bet to cash, but your returns will be considerably higher than on a single bet. You can only bet parlays on PointsBet’s fixed odds markets and not their PointsBetting spread markets. Follow the step below to find out how to wager at parley bet at PointsBet.
