NFL MVP candidates for 2023-2024: Who are the favorites?

As shown in our NFL MVP odds table above, all of the top NFL MVP candidates are quarterbacks. Below we will provide further information about each of NFL MVP favorites:

Patrick Mahomes NFL MVP Odds (+700)

Patrick Mahomes is the clear betting favorite for the NFL MVP award this season. Mahomes is the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs and is coming off a season where he and the Chiefs won the Super Bowl. Mahomes also won the NFL MVP award this past season. During the 2022-2023 season, Mahomes posted 5,250 passing yards, 41 passing touchdowns and 12 interceptions. If he can put up numbers close to this, Mahomes should have the chance to win back-to-back NFL MVP awards. His current NFL MVP odds are +700 at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Joe Burrow NFL MVP Odds (+750)

Joe Burrow is another one of the NFL MVP favorites with odds of +750 at DraftKings Sportsbook. Burrow is the quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals. Burrow had 4,475 passing yards, 35 passing touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in the 2022–2023 season. Burrow’s chances at winning the NFL MVP likely depend on how successful the Bengals are this season.

Josh Allen NFL MVP Odds (+800)

The third of the NFL MVP favorites is Josh Allen. His NFL MVP odds are +800 at DraftKings Sportsbook. Allen is the quarterback for the Buffalo Bills. He posted 4,283 passing yards, 35 passing touchdowns, and 14 interceptions during the 2022-2023 season. He and the Bills have been so close to making a Super Bowl, but have come up short the past few seasons. For Allen to win the NFL MVP award, he will likely need to improve on his passing numbers, and touchdowns, while also cutting down on his interceptions.

Jalen Hurts NFL MVP Odds (+1100)

Fourth on the current NFL MVP odds list is Jalen Hurts. He has odds of +1100 at DraftKings Sportsbook. Hurts is the quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2022-2023, Hurts recorded 3,701 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. On top of that, Hurts rushed for 760 yards and had 13 rushing touchdowns. For Hurts to win the NFL MVP award, he will likely need to throw for more touchdown passes, while keeping pace with his rushing production.

Lamar Jackson NFL MVP Odds (+1500)

Lamar Jackson has the fifth-best NFL MVP odds at +1500 on DraftKings Sportsbook. Jackson is the quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens. Jackson posted 2,242 passing yards, 17 passing touchdowns, and 7 interceptions in 2022-2023. The problem with Jackson is that he tends to have trouble staying on the field. In the past two seasons, he has only played in 12 games, so unless he manages to stay a full season, winning the NFL MVP might be off the table.

NFL MVP 2023-2024: Long-shot candidates to watch

One of the NFL MVP candidates that could be considered a longshot is Aaron Rodgers.  That sounds strange to say, but Rodgers’ NFL MVP odds are +1600 at DraftKings Sportsbook. Having made the move to the New York Jets, Rodgers may be under even more scrutiny to perform. The Jets have some young talent on the offensive side of the ball, players Rodgers can utilize to put up some big numbers. Rodgers has also won the NFL MVP award four times in his career and could have what it takes to add a fifth to his resume.

How we make our NFL MVP 2023-2024 predictions

We make our NFL MVP betting predictions by simply looking at the NFL MVP candidates’ stats from the previous season. If the players we look at had a great season the prior year, it could mean that they are ready to take the next step and potentially win this award.

How the NFL MVP is decided

The NFL MVP award is voted on by a panel of 50 sportswriters at the end of the regular season. This means the playoffs are not taken into account, only the regular season. The player who receives the most votes will be named the NFL MVP the day before the Super Bowl.

Trends & Statistics for the NFL MVP

Some of the statistics that go into the current NFL MVP odds include the previous season’s passing stats, passing touchdowns, and interceptions. For running backs, this would be rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, and with wide receivers, this would be receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

On 11 occasions, the NFL MVP winner has gone on to win the Super Bowl that same season, most recently Patrick Mahomes in 2022-2023. This is likely a reason why he is the favorite to win the NFL MVP award in 2023-2024.

Below is a table of the top three teams who have won the most NFL MVP Awards:

Who has won the NFL MVP most often?

Peyton Manning has won the NFL MVP award the most often. He has won this award five times, four of which with the Indianapolis Colts (2003, 2004, 2008, 2009) and once with the Denver Broncos (2013).

Aaron Rodgers is in second place with four NFL MVP awards, all coming with the Green Bay Packers (2011, 2014, 2020, 2021).
