NFL Coach of the Year candidates for 2023-2024: Who are the favorites?

Most of the NFL Coach of the Year favorites listed in our NFL Coach of the Year odds table are coaches of teams that struggled last year. That being said, they have all improved their teams over the offseason and have the opportunity to make a real run at the NFL playoffs.

Below we have listed these NFL Coach of the Year favorites and provided more information about why they could win this award for the upcoming season.

Dan Campbell NFL Coach of the Year Odds (+850)

The NFL Coach of the Year betting favorite is Dan Campbell. He is the Head Coach of the Detroit Lions and his current NFL Coach of the Year odds are +850 at DraftKings Sportsbook. Campbell led the Detroit Lions to a 9-8 season in 2022-2023 which is a vast improvement from a 3-13 season in 2021-2022. The Lions finished second in the NFC North last season and added some great potential during the 2023 Draft. Because of this, the Lions are projected to improve even further and should be a playoff contender.

Sean Payton NFL Coach of the Year Odds (+900)

Next on the list of NFL Coach of the year favorites is Sean Payton. He returns to the NFL as Heach Coach of the Denver Broncos. His NFL Coach of the Year odds are +900 at DraftKings Sportsbook. Over the course of his coaching career, Payton has compiled a 152-89 record. He has one Super Bowl title in 2009-2010.

Matt Eberflus NFL Coach of the Year Odds (+1100)

The third of the NFL Coach of the Year favorites is Matt Eberflus. He is the Head Coach of the Chicago Bears and his odds to win the NFL Coach of the Year award are +1100 at DraftKings Sportsbook. Eberflus had a rough 2022-2023 season, going 3-14 with the Bears. They picked up some talent in the NFL Draft and their quarterback, Justin Fields has even more experience, which at the very least should help the Bears improve on their record from last season.

Arthur Smith NFL Coach of the Year Odds (+1400)

Arthur Smith is fourth on the list for the NFL Coach of the Year odds at +1400. He is the Head Coach of the Atlanta Falcons, leading them to a record of 7-10 in his first two seasons at the helm. The Falcons added running back Bijan Robinson in the NFL Draft, and improved their defense. If they can take the next step and make the playoffs, Smith could be a good choice to win this award.

Matt LaFleur NFL Coach of the Year Odds (+1500)

To round out the top five for the NFL Coach of the Year favorites, we have Matt LaFleur. He is the Head Coach of the Green Bay Packers and his current NFL Coach of the Year odds are +1500 at DraftKings Sportsbook. This will also be his first season without the services of Aaron Rodgers. Having gone 8-9 last season with Rodgers, it may be difficult for them to improve with a new quarterback under center. If the Packers do not improve, LaFleur is likely not going to be considered for NFL Coach of the Year.

NFL Coach of the Year 2023-2024: Long-shot candidates to watch

One coach who could be considered a long-shot to win the NFL Coach of the Year award would be Doug Pederson at odds of +2200. He is the Head Coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Pederson led the Jaguars to a playoff appearance this past season, and even though they lost, the Jaguars could be a dark horse for the Super Bowl this year. They are slowly getting better every season and if they can have a breakout regular season, Pederson could be in line for winning this award.

How we make our NFL Coach of the Year 2023-2024 predictions

The main thing we look at when it comes to our NFL Coach of the Year betting predictions is how the coach has fared in their career. This especially includes their most recent season and what they did to help improve their teams over the offseason.

How the NFL Coach of the Year is decided

The NFL Coach of the Year award is voted on by a panel of 50 sports writers. The coach who receives the most votes will be named at the annual NFL awards ceremony. These sports writers are usually with the Associated Press (AP).

Trends & Statistics for the NFL Coach of the Year

The NFL Coach of the Year is not always the best coach from that particular season. The voters look at coaches who improved their team the most from the previous year, or a coach who took their team to the playoffs after losing one of their biggest stars early in the season.

That being said, if a coach were to ever have a perfect regular season, or only lose a handful of games, this would also be a reason why a coach might win the NFL Coach of the Year award.
