NY Rangers WinPHI Flyers @ NY Rangers

The Philadelphia Flyers have hit a tough skid dropping 7 of their last 8 games, including a 5-2 loss at the hands of the New Jersey Devils their last time out on the ice. A positive for the Flyers is that they should be well rested for this one given the fact that their last scheduled game against the New York Islanders was postponed due to COVID restrictions. Offensively, the Flyers are averaging just over 2 goals a game. Defensively, the Flyers are allowing just over 2 goals a game, despite giving up on average 34 shots a game, which ranks them in the bottom 5 in the entire league. They will need to tighten up on defense in order to have a chance against the Rangers in this one. Expected in net for the Flyers is goaltender Carter Hart who is posting a .920 save percentage and allowing just over 2 goals a game. Despite facing such a high number of shots game in and game out, Hart gives the Flyers their best chance to win with him in net. They will need a big game from him here if they want to turn this losing streak around.

The New York Rangers look to continue their winning ways having won 7 of their last 8 games, including a 5-2 victory over the Boston Bruins last Friday afternoon. Much like the Flyers, the Rangers will come into this one well rested after their last game against the New York Islanders was postponed due to COVID restrictions. Offensively, the Rangers are finding a way to score almost 3 goals game despite being one of the worst teams in shots on goal, putting just 28 shots on net a game. Defensively, they sit just middle of the pack allowing over 2 goals a game. Goaltender Igor Shesterkin is expected to be in net for this one posting a .933 save percentage and only allowing just over 2 goals a game. When making a wager on this one it is important to play the trends. The Flyers have dropped 6 in a row while the Rangers are undefeated in their last 5 home games. With fatigue not playing a factor for either team after a few extra days rest, the best bet is to ride the hot hand in this one. Take the Rangers on the money line with confidence and expect the Flyers to continue to fall short in this one.

Under 6.0PHI Flyers @ NY Rangers

This game will feature two rested teams that are trending in two totally different directions. The New York Rangers have won 7 of their last 8 while the Philadelphia Flyers have lost 7 of their last 8. One thing that the Flyers have struggled with over this losing stretch is putting goals in the back of the net. Considering the Rangers will have Igor Shesterkin in net, it’s very possible that the struggling Flyers only score 1 goal, if any this game. With that in mind, the Rangers would have to score 6 goals by themselves in order to cover the total, given that the game total for this game is set at 6. Take the under in this one and expect a struggling Flyers offense to be the key in this one.

TOR Maple Leafs WinCOL Avalanche @ TOR Maple Leafs

The Colorado Avalanche come into this one after a huge 6-2 victory over the Nashville Predators, all the while winning 7 of their last 8 games out on the ice. It’s no secret that the Avalanche have one of the best offenses in the entire NHL, scoring over 4 goals a game. The issue this season has been their defense, allowing almost 4 goals a game. Giving up that many goals a game can be deflating for any offense, even one as good as the Avalanche have been so far this season. Expected in the crease for the Avalanche is goaltender Darcy Kuemper. Kuemper is posting a .903 save percentage and allowing just under 3 goals a game. While he has had a decent year, it is difficult to stay sharp when the defense in front of him has struggled as much as they have. While the offense can keep up with the Maple Leafs, the defense will need to pick up in order to pull off a win in this one.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are on a 4-game win streak including a 5-1 victory against the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday night. While the Maple Leafs are off to a great start, their offense still has a lot be desired scoring just over 2 goals a game. Given the star power that is on their team, there is no reason they shouldn’t be scoring goals at the same rate the Avalanche are. A major bright spot for the Maple Leafs has been their defense, only allowing 2 goals a game making them one of the best in the league. Goaltender Jack Campbell is expected to be in net for this one posting a .946 save percentage and only allowing just over 1 goal a game. Both teams have their strengths and weaknesses, but in a toss-up game like this, the best play here is to back the team with the better defense and the better goaltender. Take the Maple Leafs on the money line for only a small wager in a game that truly is a toss-up.

Over 6.0COL Avalanche @ TOR Maple Leafs

This game will feature the Colorado Avalanche and the Toronto Maple Leafs in what should be one of the better games of the evening. The Maple Leafs have one of the best defenses in the NHL however, both teams have two offenses more than capable of turning this game into a shootout. The amount of offensive star-power in this one is unreal and should make this game a fun one. Players like Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Gabriel Landeskog, JT Compher, Mikko Rantanen, and the rest of the forwards will look to find the back of the net and run up the score. Still, both goalies are more than capable of standing on their heads and making a handful of unreal saves, but the offenses should be too much in this one. Take the over in what should be an offensive showdown, despite the spectacular defense brought to the table by the Maple Leafs.

DET Red Wings WinSEA Kraken @ DET Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings have been a bit of a streaky team this season, so backing them when they are hot makes some sense. After dropping 4 in a row, the Red Wings are now on a 3-game winning streak. Their top line consisting of Dylan Larkin, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Lucas Raymond is firing on all cylinders, and both Raymond and Moritz Seider are raising eyebrows across the league in their rookie seasons. The Wings are on the second half of a back-to-back, but the good news is that they are on their home ice in this one. They are 7-2-2 at home, while the Kraken have posted a less than impressive 3-7-1 record on the road.

The Kraken have struggled with consistency in their inaugural season and they are giving up a ton of goals. Only 3 teams are allowing more goals per game than Seattle (3.50), so Detroit’s strong top line should be looking to do some damage. Seattle has also had some shaky goaltending from Philipp Grubauer, who is the expected starter. He is posting a pedestrian .890 save percentage to go along with a 3.03 GAA. Look for Detroit’s offense to take advantage of a poor Seattle defense and claim a 4th consecutive win.

The Kraken are giving up a ton of goals. They have not been able to consistently keep the puck out of their own net, and Grubauer has not been able to find a groove between the pipes. The Red Wings are playing with a ton of momentum, and they know that the Kraken have struggled away from Seattle. Look for Detroit to have a strong offensive day.

Thomas Greiss is expected to start in goal for the Wings and he has allowed 4 goals in each of his last 2 starts. Detroit’s defensive legs could be a bit slow after facing Boston last night, so Seattle should be able to have some offensive success as well. Look to the over.

VAN Canucks WinVAN Canucks @ OTT Senators

Tonight features a matchup between two of the worst teams in the NHL. The Vancouver Canucks check in at 7-14-2 and they are playing below expectations yet again in 2021. They are losers of 8 out of their last 10 games, but should benefit from facing off against an even worse team in the Ottawa Senators. The Canucks have been more competitive on the road than at home. With a road record of 4-8-1 they have found ways to win on occasion and their goaltending has been better of late. Starting netminder Thatcher Demko has held down the fort, allowing just 10 goals over the past 5 games, with the Canucks winning 2 of them. Goalscoring has been the chief issue for this team and that could get better at least for one night as the Senators allow 3.84 goals per game, the most in the NHL.

As bad as the Canucks have been, the Senators are worse in most stats and trends. The offense scores at a rate of just 2.42 goals per game and they have been outscored 21-10 since their COVID outbreak postponements. With goaltender Matt Murray being placed on waivers Flilip Gustavsson has been tabbed the starter and he’s not playing well overall. Roll with the road team in the Canucks in the hopes that talent and goaltending takes down the Senators tonight,

Under 5.5VAN Canucks @ OTT Senators

Here’s a staggering trend for the Vancouver Canucks: they have a game total under record of 14-7-2 on the season. The number makes sense when you consider the goaltending has been better of late with Thatcher Demko and that the team scores only 2.26 goals per game, which is 4th-lowest in the NHL. There is offensive talent on this team, but you wouldn’t know it based on the numbers. Brock Boeser missed the start of the season and looks out of sync and Brandon Sutter, their anchor in the middle, continues to miss games. Their power-play unit is also in the bottom third of the NHL, hitting at just 16.9%.

The Senators’ defense is the only thing causing concern for an under bet. They dumped Murray and have 2 goaltenders who have never had to carry a heavy load. They don’t score enough goals, either. Take the under.

PIT Penguins WinPIT Penguins @ EDM Oilers

In the first matchup in more than two years between Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid, the Oilers and Penguins are both playing well heading into this Wednesday night showdown. The Oilers, led by McDavid and Leon Draisatl, are soaring to new heights this year. They’ve been dominant at home, recording an 8-1-0 record at Scotiabank Place. Edmonton had a perfect (5-0-0) in November at home, scoring 5+ goals in 4 of those 5 games.

Meanwhile, the Penguins are 6-0-1 in meetings between Crosby and McDavid. Though McDavid has won the battles, outscoring Crosby 10-4 in points in these meetings, the Penguins have often won the war. The Penguins are 8th in the league in expected goals percentage, while the Oilers are 14th. Even though goaltender Mikko Koskinen has played well this year, owning an 11-2 record, he’s only at 0.25 goals saved above expected, showing that the Oilers’ 7th-ranked offense has been scoring enough to cover up their defense, which ranks 27th in expected goals against. With injuries to the Oilers’ blue line, take the Penguins and the plus money to come away with 2 points in Edmonton.

Over 6.0PIT Penguins @ EDM Oilers

The Oilers have gone exactly 5-5 in their last 10 against the game total. However, the Oilers are missing key defensemen Darnell Nurse and Cody Ceci tonight. They’ll be starting an assortment of young defensemen, which won’t help their already-shaky team defense that gives up 34 shots a game (28th in the league). The Penguins are 13th in goals scored per 60 minutes, but 5th in expected goals per 60 minutes. That suggests that some puck luck may be on the horizon.

The Penguins have had the under hit in 6 of their last 8, likely due to Tristan Jarry’s outstanding season. Jarry is 2nd in the league in goals saved above expected at 11.28. He has been playing well, but he hasn’t had to face the likes of the Oilers offense yet, in which McDavid and Draisaitl are producing at an otherworldly pace. Lean towards the over and look for some fireworks in this edition of McDavid vs Crosby.

VGS Golden Knights WinVGS Golden Knights @ ANA Ducks

The Vegas Golden Knights play the Anaheim Ducks in a Pacific Division clash on Wednesday night. The Ducks will be playing in back-to-back games after facing the Kings on Tuesday. The Ducks were one of the hottest teams just a week ago, winning 8 straight games, but before Tuesday’s shootout win over the Kings they had lost 4 of their previous 5 games, with the only win coming against Ottawa, the Eastern Conference’s last-place team.

Defense is not the strong suit for either team. Both are averaging around 3 goals against per game in their last 5 games, rank in the bottom 12 of goals against, and rank in the bottom 10 of expected goals against per 60 minutes — with the Knights ranking last in the latter department. The offensive edge goes to the Knights. In their past 5 games the Knights are averaging 3.4 goals per game, whereas the Ducks are averaging around 2. The gap between the teams grows as you look at expected goals per 60 minutes, as the Knights rank 2nd and the Ducks 19th. The Ducks’ projected starter, backup Anthony Stolarz, has played only 5 games this season and when he faced another offensive-minded team in the Oilers, he let in 5 goals. Lean towards the rested team that can take advantage of a backup goalie and back the Knights.

The Knights are averaging 3.5 goals per game in their last 10 games, scoring at least 2 per game in that span. It is a top-tier offense that can take full advantage of a backup goalie, such as the one the Ducks are projected to start in Stolarz.

The Ducks’ offense isn’t much worse, as they rank in the top 10 in goals and goals per game as well as having the 4th-ranked power play. This offense should generate chances and score against the last-ranked team in expected goals against per 60 minutes. With 2 high-powered offenses and weak defensive units trying to stop them, take the over.

How Do I Get NHL Picks For Today’s Games?

NHL Picks are most similar to MLB Picks, in that the most popular NHL wagering is done via the Moneyline (ML) where a bettor simply picks a winner or loser of the game finding value in the price. Just like an MLB pitcher, NHL game lines are determined largely by the goaltender matchup. You’re going to pay a premium price (-180 or more) for putting in an NHL free pick on a solid goaltender – but it’s one position that can literally win or lose the bet for you. Fatigue is also a factor in finding the best NHL picks as Team A may be playing their first game in a week while Team B is in their 3rd contest in 5 nights.

We try to post our NHL picks for today at least 24 hours in advance. However, due to the huge volume of games, this can sometimes be impossible if teams are playing back-to-back games. We want to get our picks up as close as possible to the opening lines so we can get on the early line value, but team news and research is always key to making the best possible NHL Picks.

NHL Picks Against the Spread

NHL betting has a 1.5 goal spread known as the puck line (PL). Again just like baseball betting has the run line (-1.5). NHL wagers are exciting until the very last second of the game as teams often pull their goaltender near the end to get an extra skater on the ice. All of a sudden an empty-net goal pushes your NHL free pick to victory – or defeat. Betting on the puck line provides better payout odds and NHL picks against the spread can also be pushed to higher numbers such as -2.5 or 3.5 goals for an even better return on investment.

Free NHL Over / Under Picks

Most games are listed right around 5.5 goals in the NHL. The total number of goals is the total of combined goals by both teams and you can either select over or under the total. If the line is 5.5 and you wish to wager on the over then the total combined goals for the game must be 6 or more for you to cash your ticket.

NHL over/under betting is an interesting wager. A huge factor to take into consideration is the goaltenders as they have a huge part to play influencing the number of goals in the game. A goaltender’s Goals Against Average (GAA) is a key stat to measure the effectiveness of a goaltender.
