St. John’s Red Storm vs. Villanova Wildcats Predictions
Pickswise's Expert Predictions & Analysis
Point Spread Prediction
St. John’s beat Villanova by 11 at home on February 3. That was a very surprising positive result. In their last game, they lost to DePaul by five, at home. That was a very surprising negative result. Combined those results show the floor and ceiling of this group. They have three critical games to close the season and if they can win two of them they might get into the Tournament. It is hard to imagine a team beating Villanova twice and not getting in so this would be the one to get, though that might be too much to expect of the Red Storm.
Villanova won on Saturday at home against UConn. A win is better than a loss, but it was not the kind of performance that is going to vault them back into the conversation for a number one seed. I love the talent and depth of this team but I think they are playing a little too patiently. They have five scorers in double-figures and should be creating more opportunities with pace. Especially with the veteran leadership of lead guard Collin Gillespie. St. John’s is always happy to run so maybe they bring it out of them.
St. Johns has been a profitable team to back this season. They are 13-10 ATS for the year. As a road underdog, they are 3-3 SUATS and this is an interesting spot because they have already beaten the Wildcats once this season. They are +11.5 here but that previous result, and their season-long success against the number, have my attention. Villanova was -9.5 in that upset loss on the road and it is sensible to make them a slightly larger favorite at home. I am just not seeing it as a good bet, especially with the way the Red Storm can put up points in a hurry. Even if they are down a bunch they could creep back and get the cover without challenging for the win.
Take St. Johns.
Game Totals Prediction
The total tells me that St. John’s is definitely going to influence the pace on Tuesday. When these teams met recently the total was only 150.5 and it came in well under as the Wildcats scored only 59 points. That was a season-low and a definite outlier for Villanova. Now the total is a couple of buckets higher, making it the second-highest total in a Villanova game this season. That tells me that the oddsmakers think Villanova is going to indulge St. John’s. I think it is the better way for this team to play and I would be happy to see it, both for entertainment and to cash the ticket. Villanova has been scoring 81ppg at home. They get over that total in this one and that pushes the total over for the game too.
Take the over.
