The best day of the week is here; that, of course, being Winsday. It’s the first one of the season (not counting last week’s rare standalone debut game on Netflix), and we’ve got the usual full slate of games ahead, like always on Wednesdays. Let’s break down my over/under MLB best bet of the day, while you can also find out our expert MLB picks for each of today’s 15 matchups.

MLB Over/Under best bet: Tigers vs Diamondbacks Under 8.0 (-117)

Today’s total brings us to the desert for the first time, where the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks will finish off the year’s first series from Chase Field. It also brings us the 2nd assignment on the season for back-to-back American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal. Not much has to be said about the Motor City’s prized ace. He’s arguably the best pitcher in all of baseball – and has been in this conversation for multiple years now. Skubal’s first start of 2026 leads us to believe that distinction won’t change in the new campaign.

Facing a fairly hard-hitting San Diego Padres batting order, Skubal delivered 6 effective innings, allowing only an unearned run and striking out six. He only threw 74 pitches in his Opening Day affair, but remember, starting pitchers typically have a shorter workload in their season debut, plus the Tigers had jumped out to a significant lead anyway. In his 2nd turn, I expect Skubal to definitely go deeper while blessing the baseball world with his typical dominant brand of pitching once again. The D-backs haven’t gotten out to a great start against left-handers, hitting just .206 in those at-bats. While this isn’t from a huge sample size, it’s just hard to see Arizona suddenly flip on the switch opposite the sport’s No. 1 southpaw.

Additionally, scanning the Diamondbacks’ lineup today reveals an overall lackluster group that shouldn’t really threaten Skubal’s presence. Career journeyman (and mostly a dead bat) Ildemaro Vargas is batting 5th (usually he’s anchored toward the bottom), and with a 7-8-9 trio of Jose Fernandez, Tim Tawa and Jordan Lawlar, I mean, come on. Skubal should have his way.

Counterpart Zac Gallen is the key to engineering an under here. Given that Gallen’s shown a resurgence since the 2nd half of last season, I believe he can contribute something useful.  The former World Series Game 1 starter endured a bit of a misleading season debut last time out, when he had the toughest possible assignment for a pitcher, having to go into LA and take on the defending champs in their home opener. Gallen was faring fine, even keeping the Dodgers off the scoreboard through the first 4 innings before things unraveled in the 5th.

Gallen is one of the smartest pitchers in the game and has the competitiveness to match it. There is no doubt he’s been stewing about how that first outing turned out in the five days since and I’m banking on a rebound from the right-hander this afternoon. Given who the opposing hurler is, Gallen should have some room for cushion as well.
