What was a highly anticipated heavyweight series has become a bit lopsided. The Oilers have the Golden Knights on the brink of elimination on the heels of Edmonton’s 3-0 shut-out win over Vegas in Game 4. Hockey fans should be treated to a fast, intense Game 5 between these teams as Edmonton will make a big push to advance, while Vegas is playing to keep their season alive. This should be a great matchup and if you want a little something extra to root for, here’s my Oilers vs Golden Knights Same Game Parlay at +500 odds. Edmonton Oilers ML over Vegas Golden Knights (+110)
There are a few “would’ve”, “should’ve”, “could’ve” scenarios in this series. A realistic one is that the Oilers could very well have swept this series if not for a Vegas buzzer-beater in Game 3. Since dropping the first 2 games of their opening-round series, the Oilers have won 7 of their last 8 games by an average of 2 goals per game. Their only loss during that span was the aforementioned last-second Golden Knights win. The Oilers played arguably their most complete game of these playoffs in Game 4 with an impressive shutout against a great team. Edmonton is really feeling it and clicking on both offensive and defensive cylinders.
In addition to giving Edmonton a 3-1 series lead, Monday’s shutout win made it 5 wins in the last 6 played against Vegas. With a +10 goal differential in those wins, the Oilers won those 5 games by an average of 2 goals per game. Not only has Edmonton been beating Vegas, but they have done so in fairly dominant fashion. It is not easy to beat the Golden Knights in general, let alone by multiple goals with consistency. The Oilers have been in this spot for the last few years and want nothing more than to get the job done and have extra days to rest for the Conference Finals. This is a good team in great form, and getting them at plus-money odds to close out the series looks great value.
Over 6.5 (-130)
Unsurprisingly, the Oilers are the highest-scoring team in these playoffs. They are averaging a healthy 4.20 goals per game. That consistently high goalscoring would bode well for the Over in any game as it doesn’t leave much work left for the opponent to do to get the game over the total. But what gives the over even more appeal is that the Oilers are also allowing an average of 3.40 goals per game. That combination of solid goalscoring but not great goal prevention is a recipe for a high total.
Granted, Edmonton is coming off of a shutout performance, but that was on the heels of consecutive games allowing 4 goals, which they have done in 6 of their 10 playoff games. Edmonton’s goal prevention is not a sure thing but they also have the offensive upside to make up for it. The Oilers have 9 different players who have scored at least 3 goals. That is the most of any team in these playoffs. That scoring depth has been the primary driver behind most of their Overs in these playoffs and factors to be one again in a potential clinching Game 5.
Connor McDavid anytime goalscorer (+145)
Taking a Connor McDavid goalscoring prop does not exactly feel like going out on a limb, but it adds nice value to our Oilers vs Golden Knights Same Game Parlay. In these playoffs, a McDavid goal has not been as much of a formality as it may seem. He has scored 3 goals in the 10 Oilers playoff games thus far. He leads the Oilers with 17 points, though, which is 2nd among skaters this postseason. But the points have mostly been assists. Game 5 is a good spot for McDavid to get back in the goal column, being that it is a clinching game and he should bring everything he has got.
Anyone who watched Amazon’s ‘Faceoff: Inside the NHL’ saw a side of Connor McDavid that had not yet been public. This guy wants a Stanley Cup more than anything. Losing in Game 7 of the Finals by 1 goal crushed him but added even more fuel to the fire. He understands the importance of rest and with that, would love to eliminate Vegas and advance with a few extra days to rest ahead of the Conference Finals. Look for McDavid to play with a little added urgency and get potentially even more ice time than usual in a clinching game. That added urgency in the best player in the world gives these +145 odds plenty of value.
