Winter Olympics Men’s Ice Hockey best bet: USA vs Germany Under 6.5 (+105)
Odds available at DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing
Team USA has shown the ability to light the lamp early and often in each of their first 2 games of this tournament. The Americans have potted 11 total goals through 2 games, but this contest could be a bit lower scoring for several reasons. First, this is the first time this tournament that each team is playing on consecutive days. USA defeated Denmark 6-3 on Saturday, while Germany fell to Latvia 4-3. It will be interesting to see how each team handles that new scheduling wrinkle, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see each team spend the first period getting a feel for the other’s game plan.
Secondly, Team USA is a perfect 6-on-6 when killing off opposing power plays so far in this tournament. The Germans are just 1-for-6 on the man advantage, and their power play percentage of 16.7% is the second-worst mark among the 12 teams in the tournament. Furthermore, after the struggles of Jeremy Swayman between the pipes on Saturday, it seems likely that USA head coach Mike Sullivan goes back to Connor Hellebuyck in this matchup. Hellebuyck was strong in net in the opener, as he turned aside 17 of the 18 shots he faced against Latvia. He should be able to put forth a solid performance in net against a Germany team that is fairly top-heavy offensively.
Team Germany’s forward group is quite reliant on stars Leon Draisaitl and Tim Stutzle to lead the way. The Germans don’t possess much scoring depth, and while No. 1 defenseman Moritz Seider is a star, he tends to focus on the defensive side of the game and being physical against the top skaters from opposing teams. He is very positionally-sound, and should be able to lead a solid defensive effort for Germany against USA. All in all, look for this game to be a bit more physical and stay under the listed total of 6.5.
Winter Olympics Men’s Ice Hockey best bet: Macklin Celebrini anytime goal-scorer (-120)
Odds available at DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing
The Canadians enter Sunday’s matchup against France as overwhelming favorites. With a puck line spread of Canada -6.5 and a game total of 7.5, there are other areas of value to find in this matchup. For our other best bet for Sunday’s slate, we are looking for Macklin Celebrini to score a goal against France. At 19 years old, Celebrini became the youngest player to ever suit up for Team Canada earlier this week. He hasn’t shown any signs of being overwhelmed, as he’s collected 2 goals and 3 points through Canada’s first 2 games of the tournament. He even scored Canada’s first goal of the tournament back on Thursday against Czechia.
Celebrini has emerged into one of the NHL’s brightest young stars this season. He’s already racked up 81 points through 55 games this season, which is good for the 4th-most in the league. His 28 goals have already exceeded his total of 25 from last season, and his shooting percentage has increased from 10.6% last season to 14.7% so far this season. Those efforts not only landed him a spot on Team Canada’s Olympic roster, but a spot on the top line alongside Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon.
Celebrini has thrived playing alongside McDavid, as the pair have combined for 3 goals and 9 points through 2 games. McDavid has focused his efforts on finding other players, as he has 5 assists and just a single goal. McDavid love creating space and making the extra pass, and that mindset could continue to benefit Celebrini in this matchup. In a game where Canada could easily score 7+ goals, look for Celebrini to find the back of the net for the Canadians.
