And then there were 4… Yes, the U.S. Open mixed doubles competition is already down to the semifinals, as the first round and quarterfinals both took place on Tuesday. The field of 16 at Flushing Meadows has seen 12 teams eliminated. Three more will fall by the wayside on Wednesday night, leaving 1 to lift the trophy in this new, revamped mixed doubles format. Here are my US Open mixed doubles best bets for today and a winner prediction heading into the final day.

US Open mixed doubles best bet: Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori ML over Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison (-150)
Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori are the only team in the entire field consisting entirely of doubles specialists. The Italians have made no secret that they are playing for all of their fellow doubles players who were denied a place in the draw. But they are also playing for themselves. After all, they are defending champions of this tournament (even though it looked a lot different last summer than it does now). Errani and Vavassori are not about to relinquish the trophy without a fight – especially not to singles players. They were dominant on Tuesday, taking care of Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz before disposing of Karolina Muchova and Andrey Rublev.
Danielle Collins (a singles player) and Christian Harrison (a doubles specialist) also played well in the first round and quarterfinals. However, Collins does not appear to be serving 100 percent due to a back issue that gave her problems earlier this month in Cincinnati. I think the Americans are in trouble.
US Open mixed doubles pick: Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud ML over Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper (+106)
Iga Swiatek is making a quick turnaround after capturing the Cincinnati title on Monday. Less than 24 hours later, the Pole got right back in gear to win 2 matches alongside Casper Ruud on Tuesday afternoon. They beat Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe 4-1, 4-2 before easing past Caty McNally and Lorenzo Musetti – also 4-1, 4-2. Now they face the top seeds, Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper. The American-British pairing also rolled on Tuesday (d. Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz in round 1, d. Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev in the quarters). Those opponents really aren’t good doubles teams, however. Swiatek and Ruud are a sizable step up in competition. I’ll happily back a minor upset.
US Open mixed doubles winner prediction: Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud (+430)
Without taking odds into consideration, I would back Errani and Vavassori (+187 favorites) to triumph. At +430, however, the value on Swiatek and Ruud is too good to pass up. Swiatek is quite simply looking like the best player on the WTA Tour again – even though she doesn’t play much doubles, her game can translate to whatever she is playing on a tennis court. Ruud has competed in doubles on a number of occasions, so he knows what he’s doing out there. Their sparkling performance on Tuesday was no fluke.
