Notable 2026 MLB Offseason Moves

The rich did indeed get richer during the offseason, with star outfielder Kyle Tucker joining the aforementioned Dodgers. Tucker provides Los Angeles with a premier left-handed bat, filling a hole they had in their outfield. In return, Tucker will receive $240 million across 4 seasons, making him the 2nd-highest-paid player on an annual basis in MLB behind his new teammate Shohei Ohtani. The Dodgers also signed the top reliever in the free agent market, inking Edwin Diaz to a 3-year, $69 million deal.

Boston bolstered its rotation by acquiring Sonny Gray, Ranger Suarez and Johan Oviedo. They also added Willson Contreras to play first base for the club. Boston did lose Alex Bregman in free agency to the Chicago Cubs, however.

Bo Bichette was another star infielder to depart the AL East, leaving Toronto for the National League to play for the new-look New York Mets. The Mets also acquired Freddy Peralta and numerous other notable veteran players. New York did see the departure of longtime first baseman Pete Alonso, who will now play his home games for the Baltimore Orioles.

Several other AL contenders made splashes, including Framber Valdez to the Tigers, Dylan Cease to the Blue Jays, and the Mariners adding Brendan Donovan and retaining Josh Naylor. The eventful offseason has fanbases across North America fired up for the 2026 season as it shapes up to be another terrific year.

2026 MLB World Series best bet: LA Dodgers (+230)

Odds available at DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing. Playable to +200.

Is it fun to set aside a chunk of cash for an entire season on a bet that barely pays over 2/1 your investment? There may be more thrilling choices with long odds that can stir up some hope over a long season, but getting fair pricing on a back-to-back champion that got better in the offseason is enticing to me. THEBATX projection system, known for its accuracy in recent MLB seasons, gives the Dodgers a 30.3% chance of winning the World Series in 2026. Those 30.3% implied odds translate to a +230 wager. Projection systems tend to be conservative, and I think the Dodgers could justifiably be priced closer to +200.

Shohei Ohtani, Kyle Tucker, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman will top the most lethal lineup in the sport, while the middle and backend of that unit has plenty of depth. Their starting rotation has numerous capable pieces as constructed, including the reigning 2025 World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Los Angeles did a terrific job limiting regular-season workloads for their main arms, and I expect more of the same this season. The bullpen was their weakness last season, but the addition of Edwin Diaz should help that unit out.

They also have outstanding organizational depth, possessing the top-ranked group of prospects in MLB. That group of players could supplement the MLB roster either directly or through trades for proven players at the trade deadline. Los Angeles has expressed their desire to win over the past few seasons, and I expect them to do everything in their power to remain on top in 2026.

2026 MLB World Series longshot pick: Detroit Tigers (+2800)

Odds available at Caesars Sportsbook at time of publishing. Playable to +2000 odds.

A +2800 price on a World Series champion is a fun bet to have in your pocket, and there is reason to believe the 2026 Detroit Tigers can win more often than that price suggests. Detroit is the heavy favorite to win the AL Central division in 2026. Tarik Skubal, the back-to-back AL Cy Young winner, is set to enter free agency following this season, and Detroit is looking to make the most of what is likely their final season with their star left-hander.

The team signed another studly southpaw this offseason by outpaying the market for the services of Framber Valdez. Skubal and Valdez are now the deadliest 1-2 starting duo in the sport, and their pitching depth continues after that. I believe Casey Mize has the juice to become a true number 3 starter in this league, while Jack Flaherty has proven valuable for Detroit in recent seasons. The Tigers also reunited with Justin Verlander for what is likely to be his final MLB campaign.

Their bullpen was already deep and talented before signing Kenley Jansen, who gives them even more experience. Detroit has a ton of lineup flexibility when it comes to their platoon options and having players that can play multiple positions. This allows them to flow through the grind of a regular season and all the injuries and inconsistent stretches that come with 162 games. It will be interesting to see if Kerry Carpenter can return to 2024 form and if rookie Kevin McGonigle can make the impact he is projected to as a top prospect in the sport. My hope is that the front office continues their aggression at the trade deadline by adding another bat to the lineup, but at +2800, I am willing to buy in before the season starts.
