Kansas City Chiefs -2.5 over Detroit Lions (-112)

While the Lions are looking like a very trendy underdog on Sunday, I’m more inclined to back the Chiefs in a spot where Kansas City has come through time and again over the years. Patrick Mahomes and company are coming off a loss to Jacksonville, but the Chiefs had their fair share of things going against them in that game, including a very rare pick-6 from Mahomes as Kansas City was about to punch in a touchdown to seize control of the game in the second half. Now, the future Hall of Famer and a Chiefs offense that has looked rejuvenated following the insertion of Xavier Worthy back into the fold should be able to put up points against a Detroit secondary that has some real issues, and is banged up heading into this contest.

Patrick Mahomes over 1.5 passing touchdowns (-208)

This is a prop bet that goes hand-in-hand with my handicap on the game, as the Chiefs winning and cover the number aligns nicely with Mahomes tossing at least 2 touchdowns. As previously mentioned, this is a Detroit defense that certainly isn’t perfect, particularly when it comes to the issues that the Lions have in the secondary. Detroit is 17th in passing yards allowed and 26th in passing touchdowns allowed this season, so even though the Lions have solid overall defensive metrics, the secondary is clearly a unit that can be had. Look for Mahomes to toss at least 2 touchdowns for the second time in the last 3 games.

David Montgomery anytime touchdown scorer (-105)

We’ve already established that the Chiefs should score plenty of points on this Detroit secondary, but the Lions offense should hold some advantages of their own in this game, particularly on the ground. After all, the Chiefs run defense has been a major issue for Steve Spagnuolo to this point in the season, with Kansas City sitting at 31st in opponent EPA per rush and 22nd in success rate allowed (Sumer Sports). In steps David Montgomery, who has been an essential change of pace running back for the Lions in the red zone and especially around the goal line. Montgomery already has 4 touchdowns on the season, and we expect him to add to that total in Kansas City on Sunday.
