Nothing seems to faze Scottie Scheffler, but if he is ever going to be caught cold, it could be this week at The American Express, a quirky pro-am played across three California courses. Jon Rahm once infamously criticised the set up for the PGA West event, labelling it “a putting contest,” but he wasn’t wrong. The eventual winner will need to roll in plenty of putts. Let’s dive into my golf predictions for this week’s American Express.

The American Express golf picks and predictions
The American Express best bet: Ludvig Aberg (+2400)
Odds available at bet365 at time of publishing.
Ludvig Aberg fits the bill. The Swede finished 3rd in the DP World Tour Championship when last seen. This is his AmEx debut, but he knows PGA West well, winning The Prestige amateur competition 3 times on the Norman Course. Aberg finished 23rd or better in his final 8 events of last season, and this week’s event is a great chance for him to capture an early title if he resumes in similar form.

The American Express prediction: Sepp Straka (+3500)
Odds available at DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing.
Aberg’s Ryder Cup teammate Sepp Straka held off Justin Thomas’s charge to win the 2025 AmEx and the Austrian looks overpriced in his attempt to do the double. Straka skipped multiple events in the 2nd half of last year due to the premature birth of his child, but he finished 3rd at the Hero World Challenge last month and should be raring to go for this defense.
The American Express longshot pick: Bud Cauley (+25000)
Odds available at bet365 at time of publishing.
Bud Cauley merits some interest at monster odds. Cauley had 4 PGA Tour top-6 finishes last season, including at the Players Championship, and while his form dipped in the 2nd half of the year, he did little wrong when 24th at the Sony Open last week. He has event form figures of 14-3-13-MC-4 and could give bettors a run for their money.
