The PGA Tour is never short on storylines – even when the sport’s superstars are absent – and that’s particularly true at the Wyndham Championship. The annual regular-season curtain-closer, taking place this week in Greensboro, North Carolina, retains its usual spot on the calendar, offering a final chance to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings following this week’s tournament will earn a spot at TPC Southwind for the FedEx St. Jude Championship, with the ultimate aim of reaching the Tour Championship at East Lake.

One of the PGA Tour’s longest-running tournaments, the Wyndham Championship was first staged in 1938 at both Starmount Forest Country Club and this week’s venue, Sedgefield Country Club. Sedgefield – a classic Donald Ross design that opened 99 years ago – was restored in 2007 and has been the exclusive home of the tournament since 2008. Measuring 7,127 yards, this par-70 differs from many modern PGA Tour venues. It demands accuracy off the tee, and the roll of honor is filled with shorter hitters – including Aaron Rai, who made his PGA Tour breakthrough in this event last year. With that in mind, let’s dive into my golf predictions for the Wyndham Championship.

Wyndham Championship golf picks and predictions

Wyndham Championship best bet: Matt Fitzpatrick (+2200)

Odds available at bet365 at time of publishing.

Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick tops the betting market and should be able to justify that position. Having finished 4th at both the Scottish Open and the British Open when advised by me, it would be wrong to dismiss him on his odds alone. Oddsmakers are taking a cautious approach with the 30-year-old, who has also placed 8th at the PGA Championship, 17th in a Signature Event at the Travelers Championship and 8th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in his last 5 US starts. They may be right to do so – but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still value in Fitzpatrick’s price.

The European Ryder Cup star is firing on all cylinders, and a lack of Sedgefield experience – he finished 36th on his only appearance in 2018 – is no major concern for a player who is known for his tee-to-green precision and sharp short game. Fitzpatrick battled manfully at the British Open, playing alongside Scottie Scheffler in Saturday’s final group before birdieing 2 of his last 3 holes on Sunday to leave Royal Portrush in high spirits. While his career highlight came at the 2022 US Open at Brookline, his 2023 win at the Heritage is just as relevant with the Wyndham in mind – Sedgefield and Harbour Town correlate well with Webb Simpson, Carl Pettersson, Brandt Snedeker and Davis Love III among those to have triumphed at both venues.

Wyndham Championship prediction: Ben Griffin (+2500)

Odds available at FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing.

There will be a strong Carolinian contingent this week, and the best of them looks to be Ben Griffin, who should be forgiven for missing the cut in his last 2 starts. Griffin putted poorly to miss the weekend by a shot at the John Deere Classic, then struggled in links conditions at the British Open. But he’s had a brilliant year – winning the Zurich Classic alongside Andrew Novak and then claiming the Charles Schwab Challenge as an individual. At 7th in the FedEx Cup standings, he can play with freedom this week at a course he loves. Griffin was 4th in the 2022 Wyndham while still a Korn Ferry Tour player, then 7th last year despite arriving off back-to-back missed cuts.

Wyndham Championship pick: Ryan Gerard (+6000)

Odds available at FanDuel Sportsbook at time of publishing.

Another Wyndham wager to consider is on Barracuda Championship winner Ryan Gerard. He is a talented, accurate ball-striker who may push on following his breakthrough win in California. He finished 8th at the PGA Championship at another North Carolina course, Quail Hollow, in May.

Wyndham Championship longshot pick: Bud Cauley (+7500)

Odds available at FanDuel Sportsbook and bet365 at time of publishing.

Bud Cauley’s form has dipped slightly after a strong spring, but he’s shown a clear affinity for Sedgefield, finishing 3rd here in 2012, 10th in 2016 and 15th in 2020. He could be in contention once again.

For the best odds on our Bud Cauley longshot pick, make sure you head over to FanDuel Sportsbook, where new users can click here to sign up now and receive $150 in bonus bets INSTANTLY if their first $5 wager is a winner!
