Here are our best bets for today’s action at Aqueduct race track.
12:50 pm Aqueduct (Race 1) – Ukrainian Princess 2/1 (2-star play)
Ukrainian Princess raced from off the pace having hit the gate when making her debut in a 6-furlong $25,000 maiden claiming contest on a good main track at this venue last month. She finished 7 1/2 lengths 3rd having raced wide at times on that occasion.
She is expected to have improved for the experience and with her jockey that day, Gherson Huayas, up again she should appreciate today’s extra furlong and looks up to breaking her maiden racing on Lasix for the first time.
1:18 pm Aqueduct (Race 2) – Melting Snow 7/5 (2-star play)
Melting Snow has changed trainers a number of times in recent months, but has impressed in winning each of her last 2 starts, including by a wide margin when making most in a $16,000 claiming contest over 7 furlongs at Aqueduct earlier this month.
She joined the Rudy R Rodriguez barn having made her only start for previous handler Rob Atras that day and looks up to completing a hat-trick having performed well at this level when placed twice at Saratoga last summer.
1:47 pm Aqueduct (Race 3) – Vax 6/5 (2-star play)
Vax has demonstrated good ability in 3 starts since debuting with a 5th in a sloppy track maiden special weight over 6 furlongs at Aqueduct at the start of October. Her latest effort came when she was 5 lengths 3rd over 7 furlongs at the end of last month.
She weakened late on in that contest having raced from the front. Similar tactics look likely from a rail draw today and she is selected to get off the mark with the 6 1/2 furlong trip in her favour.
2:47 pm Aqueduct (Race 5) – Rossa Veloce Evens (3-star play)
Successful on 5 of her 11 starts at this venue, this daughter of Girolamo completed a double when making all to win by half a length in an allowance over 6 1/2 furlongs on a good main track at Aqueduct in November. She was runner-up under similar tactics in an allowance optional claiming event over the same track and trip at the end of last month on her only subsequent start.
She looks capable of helping jockey Manny Franco to improve on his impressive 36% strike-rate (21/59) at this meeting.
4:16 pm Aqueduct (Race 8) – East Coast Girl 8/5 (2-star play)
East Coast Girl failed to shine when debuting in a maiden special weight over 6 furlongs at this track in November. She showed improved form when racing closer to the pace appeared to suit and she placed 3rd, beaten 2 3/4 lengths in a similar race to this over 6 1/2 furlongs at Aqueduct this month.
Lasix was tried for the first time that day and is again used today and the Laoban filly is selected to record her first victory for the Kelly J Breen barn.
