Horse Racing picks for Saratoga on Wednesday, July 21: Sandor Clegane will take the throne

Scott Spieth atop Silverly Enough wins the eighth race of the day at Tampa Bay Downs.

There is plenty of great horse racing action to look forward to across America on Wednesday, including at Saratoga race track. Here are three runners whom we think look to be a class above the opposition in their respective races. Let’s dive in and take a look at some potentially lucrative plays.

4:29 pm Saratoga (Race 7) – Win D’Oro +600

Race 7 at Saratoga is a $52,000 Claiming contest over a mile and a sixteenth on the turf and Win D’Oro, who is dropping down in grade, can prove best of all for trainer Mark Casse and his team. This four-year-old gelding finally broke his maiden tag on the ninth attempt at Turfway Park three starts ago and my feeling is that there is more to come and I like his chances on his first start in this grade.

5:05 pm Saratoga (Race 8) – Swashbuckle +600

Christophe Clement’s Swashbuckle is the youngest horse in this field and he can improve past his older rivals in Race 8 at Saratoga, a $95,000 Allowance Optional Claiming event over an extended five furlongs on the turf. His two wins were in Maiden Special Weight and Allowance company, both of which were at Belmont Park, and both times he showed a willing attitude to win and certainly has plenty of pace about him. He has a good draw in stall five and he should be able to stalk the pace from there before taking it up in the home stretch.

5:39 pm Saratoga (Race 9) – Highest Honors +250

The penultimate race at Saratoga is a strong looking $110,000 Allowance Optional Claimer over a mile and an eighth with preference for Chad Brown’s Highest Honors who won in this grade last time out and should come on a fair amount from that. As a three-year-old this horse finished sixth behind Code Of Honor in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at this course after which a setback was to see him off the track for a period of eighteen months. However, he has since returned to win in this company at Belmont Park just last month and it would not surprise should he win this well.

6:13 pm Saratoga (Race 10) – Sandor Clegane +1000

A competitive $50,000 Maiden Claimer ends the card at Saratoga in which a case can be made for many but I like the look of Sandor Clegane who improved quite a bit from his first to his second start as a two-year-old and can do so again on his first run at three. This son of Constitution was keeping on well when finishing fourth on his latest outing and, with improvement expected from two to three, he can go very close with a similar effort here. However, whatever he does in this race he will improve upon so it’ll be worth following him for a few more runs after this but, even so, he should go well here.
