MLB best bet: Toronto Blue Jays vs New York Yankees 7.5 (-110)

The Blue Jays are absolutely bashing the ball to begin their 2025 postseason campaign. They rolled 10-1 in the series opener and powered their way to a 13-7 victory in Game 2. Through 2 contests against the Yankees, Vladimir Guerrero is 6-for-9 with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs; Daulton Varsho is 6-for-8 with 2 homers and 4 RBIs; Alejandro Kirk is 3-for-9 with 2 dingers. Varsho scored 6 runs in the first 2 games; Guerrero, Kirk, George Springer and Andres Gimenez all scored 3. Basically everyone in Toronto’s lineup is doing damage. More good news for the Jays is that they get to face Carlos Rodon on Tuesday instead of a red-hot Cam Schlittler. Rodon is no slouch, but doesn’t have Schlittler-level stuff. The Blue Jays roughed up the lefty for 6 runs in 10.0 innings during the regular season, winning both of his starts.
Toronto is countering with Shane Bieber, who has been solid in limited work but did not make his season debut until August 22. In fact, he had not pitched since April of 2024 due to Tommy John surgery. In 3 playoff starts (both with the Cleveland Guardians), Bieber owns a 5.00 ERA. Even though the Yankees lost on Sunday, at least they crossed the plate 7 times in the final 4 innings. That should give them some confidence at the plate for Tuesday’s must-win outing.
MLB best bet: Seattle Mariners ML over Detroit Tigers (-130)
Odds available at DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing
It was all set up perfectly for the Tigers, who stole the series opener in Seattle and then had Tarik Skubal lined up for Game 2. They couldn’t get the job done, though, and now momentum is on the Mariners’ side following their 3-2 victory on Sunday. Don’t be surprised if the M’s maintain it and pick up a win in Detroit. After all, they are favored for a reason. Seattle has been the superior team for more than a month now and Logan Gilbert taking the mound is good news for the visitors. Gilbert compiled a 2.30 ERA in September and in his most recent start against the Tigers he fired 5.1 innings of scoreless baseball with 9 strikeouts during an 8-4 victory on July 13. Even when he gave up 3 runs in 5.0 innings against Detroit on April 1, Gilbert still recorded 10 Ks.
Jack Flaherty is toeing the rubber for the home side. The right-hander was effective in his appearance against Cleveland in the Wild Card Series, but he compiled an 8-15 record with a 4.64 ERA during the regular season. That’s tough to look past, and I still can’t entirely gloss over the fact that the Tigers were utterly horrendous over the last month of the season before finally getting back on track to take 2 of 3 games from the Guardians in round 1. Still, the sample size of success is a lot smaller than their recent sample size of failure. The bottom line is that the Mariners are the better team whenever Skubal isn’t pitching…and apparently even when he is!
