MLB best bet: Chicago Cubs vs Atlanta Braves Under 8 (-104)
Odds available at FanDuel Sportsbook at time of publishing.
Prior to Tuesday’s 6-1 victory in Atlanta, the Cubs had scored a total of 5 runs in their previous 3 games. Before that, they were held to 1 run by the Braves exactly a week ago at Wrigley Field. Atlanta’s bats have also gone silent. The Braves have been held to 2 runs or fewer in 3 of their last 4 contests, largely because Ronald Acuna Jr. is ice cold and has been moved to #7 in the batting order. 8 of their last 11 outings have resulted in 7 runs or fewer.
Wednesday’s pitching matchup points toward another low-scoring affair. Chris Sale is toeing the rubber for Atlanta and he comes in with a 2.38 ERA. Since returning from the 60-yard injured list, Sale has allowed only 2 runs in 12.2 innings while compiling an 18-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The Cubs are countering with Jameson Taillon, who gave up just 2 runs in 11.0 innings across 2 August starts. Nothing bodes well for 2 struggling offenses in this matchup.

MLB best bet: San Diego Padres ML over Cincinnati Reds (-155)
Odds available at bet365 at time of publishing.
San Diego is playing at home, and that is generally good news. The Padres are 44-26 at home compared to 35-40 on the road. As for the Reds, they are 5 games under .500 on the road compared to 6 games over .500 at home. Cincinnati has been scuffling of late and finds itself 3 games out of a wild-card spot in the National League. San Diego is just 2 games back of the Dodgers in the NL West, so to say that motivation is high would be an understatement.
Nick Pivetta taking the mound only helps the home side. Pivetta is 13-5 with a 2.85 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 172 strikeouts compared to just 44 walks in 164.1 innings. In his last 13 starts, the right-hander has given up more than 2 earned runs just once. Pivetta comes in with a 2.39 ERA at home. Cincinnati is countering with Andrew Abbott, who is certainly no slouch. However, the southpaw’s 3.41 road ERA is not as dominant as his 2.52 home mark. Abbott has allowed 14 runs (13 earned) in his last 3 starts (13.2 innings), so Pivetta is likely to get more than enough run support on Wednesday.
