CJ Baxter (TEX) anytime touchdown scorer (+100)

CJ Baxter tore multiple ligaments in his right knee ahead of the 2024 season, but he’s back this year, and I expect coach Steve Sarkisian to have him heavily involved in the Week 1 game plan against Ohio State to take pressure off his young quarterback in his first true road setting. The Buckeyes had an elite defense last year, but less than 50% of their production returns this year,  and a good bit of that lost production comes along the front. The Buckeyes will deploy a couple of interior defensive linemen that had solid run defense grades as depth pieces last year, but neither has played more than 250 snaps in college. This should be a matchup Baxter can take advantage of, especially deep in the red zone.

Julian Sayin (OSU) over 0.5 interceptions (-140)

Julian Sayin has an extremely high ceiling as a 5-star recruit and number 1 overall quarterback in the 2024 class. However, he has never seen real game reps, only a few passes here and there late in blowout wins once Will Howard was removed from the game. He is likely to become a great college quarterback, but this is a tough first opponent, even if the game is being played on his home field. Ohio State’s offensive line lost its best pieces in the offseason, which isn’t going to make it easier for Sayin against a fierce Texas pass rush spearheaded by Colin Simmons and Anthony Hill Jr., who combined for 31 TFL and 17 sacks last year. Look for Texas’s pressure to force Sayin into a couple rushed throws with at least one resulting in an interception by Michael Taaffe or one of the talented Longhorn cornerbacks.

Texas Longhorns 1H +0.5 vs Ohio State Buckeyes (-120)

Playing on the road at the Horseshoe will not be an easy feat for Arch Manning and the Longhorns, but they are still set up for success early in this game. If you read my Texas vs Ohio State prediction, you already know that I feel Texas has 3 key advantages in this game: coaching, defense, and running game. The Longhorns have continuity across its staff, while the Buckeyes have 2 new coordinators with minimal experience at the collegiate level.

Texas brings back more defensive production than Ohio State, and the Longhorns will have a better pair of running backs to lean on early while easing their young quarterback into action. Despite playing in a hostile road environment, Texas should have enough here to at least go into halftime tied, if not in the lead. Let’s not forget, the Longhorns are playing with a bit of revenge on their mind after losing to these very Buckeyes in the semifinals.
