Tennis

Since graduating from Davidson (The College That Stephen Curry Built), I have been writing about sports -- just about any and all you can think of! -- and coaching tennis in Atlanta, GA. Beyond the four major sports, I am an avid tennis fan and cover the ATP Tour on a daily basis. If I'm not busy writing, you can generally find me on a tennis court or traveling the world wherever a sporting event takes me. For Ricky Dimon media enquiries, please email contact@pickswise.com.

With the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon in the rearview mirror, it’s on to the U.S. Open. The season’s fourth and final Grand Slam gets started on Sunday in New York City, where Novak Djokovic, Taylor Fritz and Aryna Sabalenka are among those taking the court.

Let’s take a look at the best bets to be made on the Day 1 schedule, and also be sure to check out my best outright bets on both the men’s and women’s sides.

Benjamin Bonzi +6.5 games over Daniil Medvedev (-130)

Surprisingly, Bonzi leads the head-to-head series 2-0. He advanced via retirement while leading Medvedev 2 sets to 1 at Roland Garros in 2017 and much more recently won in 4 sets earlier this summer at Wimbledon. The Frenchman has momentum, as he just reached the Cincinnati fourth round by knocking off Matteo Arnaldi, Lorenzo Musetti and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Meanwhile, Medvedev’s game is in shambles. He has not won an ATP title in more than 2 years (Rome 2023) and he is 8-8 in his last 16 matches heading into this tournament. I wouldn’t be shocked if Bonzi wins this match straight up.

Ethan Quinn -1.5 games over Jerome Kym (-105)

Quinn seemingly has every edge in this matchup, starting with the fact that he is ranked almost 100 spots ahead of Kym. It’s not hard to figure out why, either. Despite being 1 year younger at 21, Quinn has picked up 11 match wins at the ATP level in 2025; Kym has won only 4 in his entire career. Moreover, Quinn earned a combined 3 victories at the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this season; Kym is playing in the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time ever. Finally, the American has home-court advantage over the Swiss. Count on Quinn taking this one much more comfortably than the odds indicate.

Parlay: Veronika Kudermetova ML over Janice Tjen and Belinda Bencic ML over Shaui Zhang (+107)

Both Tjen and Zhang have been winning a lot of matches, but they have been doing it at much lower levels in the sport (the minor leagues, so to speak). Kudermetova and Bencic represent significant steps up in competition. They also have massive edges in terms of experience on the big stage. Kudermetova is a former Roland Garros quarterfinalist (2022) and won the Wimbledon doubles title last month. She also advanced to the Cincinnati semis a couple of weeks ago, so she is in outstanding form. Bencic is an Olympic gold medalist in women’s singles (Tokyo 2021) and she made a run to the Wimbledon semifinals last month.
