US Open tennis best bet: Taylor Fritz (+3000)

First of all, there is not any value on Sinner (basically even money) or Alcaraz (2-1). You could make a bit of a case for Alcaraz, but he has not been anywhere close to as good as Sinner on hard courts over the past couple of seasons and the Spaniard’s recent Cincinnati title came largely as a result of Sinner’s illness. Instead, there is much better value on players with longer odds.

Enter Fritz, who finds himself on the opposite side of the draw from Sinner – which is certainly good news. The fourth-round American could face Djokovic in the quarterfinals, but – even though the 38-year-old Serb can never be written off at a slam – Djokovic is well past his prime. Fritz is playing great and reached the U.S. Open final last summer before succumbing to Sinner. He could go all the way this year.

US Open tennis prediction: Ben Shelton (+2200)

Twelve months ago there was an all-American U.S. Open semifinal between Fritz and Frances Tiafoe. Don’t be surprised if there is another in 2025, this time between Fritz and Shelton. As good as Alcaraz is, it is beneficial for both Fritz and Shelton to be in the world No. 2’s half of the draw as opposed to that of Sinner. Alcaraz is simply more vulnerable on a fast outdoor hard court. The 5-time major winner lost to Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round last summer in New York and has to face Reilly Opelka in the first round this time.

Even if Alcaraz doesn’t lose early, there is no reason why Shelton can’t oust him in the quarterfinals. Shelton won the Toronto Masters a few weeks ago and then advanced to Cincinnati quarters. The 22-year-old now arrives at his favorite tournament of all, where he made a semifinal run in 2023.

US Open tennis longshot pick: Karen Khachanov (+15000)

Like Fritz and Shelton, Khachanov loves this tournament. The 29-year-old Russian advanced to the semifinals in 2022, which is tied for his best result at a Grand Slam. His other semifinal appearance also came on an outdoor hard court – at the Australian Open in 2023. Khachanov heads to New York with a ton of momentum, having reached the Wimbledon quarters before finishing runner-up to Shelton in Toronto.

In Zverev’s section of the U.S. Open draw (thus avoiding Sinner until the semis and Alcaraz until the final), the door is open for Khachanov to make a deep run. At incredibly long odds, why not take a shot?
