World Baseball Classic best bet: USA vs Canada – Canada +4.5 (+102)

The United States, which finished second in Pool B, meets Canada, which won Pool A in an elimination game. Team USA is coming off a stunning 8-6 loss against upstart Italy, and the Americans weren’t guaranteed of advancing out of pool play until Italy did it again, eliminating Mexico in the final game of pool play.
The Americans will turn back to San Francisco Giants RHP Logan Webb for this battle against Canada, who is expected to counter with Arizona Diamondbacks RHP Michael Soroka, although that’s not yet confirmed. Webb allowed just 1 run and 1 hit, a solo home run, with no walks and 6 strikeouts across four innings in a win over Brazil back on March 6. He threw 33 of his 52 pitches for strikes, while going first-pitch strike to just six of the 13 batters he faced.
While the USA was 3-1, it was anything but smooth for pool play. It was leading just 8-5 heading to the ninth inning against Brazil, before posting seven runs in the top of the inning to make it look more lopsided than it really was. Bettors laying the 9.5 runs were certainly thankful. Team USA was just 1-3 against the spread (ATS) on the run line in pool play, while splitting the Over-Under 2-2.
For Canada, it was based at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, for Pool A play. It opened with an 8-2 victory over Colombia, with Miami Marlins OF Owen Caissie kicking a two-run homer, while Kansas City Royals 3B Abraham Toro drove in a run with a triple. In the second game, Canada was topped 4-3 by Panama in a game that endured an 85-minute rain delay, while the Canadians had some shaky defense, which helped the Panamanians. Canada bounced back with a 3-2 win in hostile territory, topping host Puerto Rico. It clinched Pool A on the final day, emphatically topping Cuba 7-2, taking advantage of three Cuban errors.
Chicago Cubs OF Pete Crow-Armstrong belted 2 homers against Italy for Team USA, and he is hitting .300 with a double, 2 homers and 5 RBIs with 2 walks in this tournament, while New York Yankees OF Aaron Judge also has a pair of homers and five RBI.
For Canada, Caissie is hitting .500 (7-for-14) with 3 doubles, a homer and 5 RBIs, with a 1.458 OPS. He also has five strikeouts. Meanwhile, Toro is the other big bat, going 7-for-15 (.467) with 3 doubles, a triple, a homer and 5 RBIs with a 1.529 OPS.
Canada will be looking to defend the nation’s honor after losing the gold medal in the Milano-Cortina Olympics in men’s and women’s hockey. The USA took gold in Canada’s favorite sport, so now the Canucks look to ruin things for America’s pastime. It’s not gonna happen, though.
Still, Canada catching more than four runs is quite a bit. Team USA might come alive, but we’re still waiting.
World Baseball Classic best bet: Dominican Republic -4.5 (-130) over Korea
Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook and available at time of publishing
The Dominican Republic, which entered the WBC with the second-shortest odds to hoist a trophy, has looked the part of a champion. They rolled through Pool D with a 12-3 victory over Nicaragua, they routed the Netherlands 12-1 in seven innings, the D.R. belted Israel 10-1 in the third game, and it received its biggest test against Venezuela in the finale, winning 7-5.
Tampa Bay Rays 3B/DH Junior Caminero has two homers and five RBI, while Pittsburgh Pirates OF Oneil Cruz has managed a pair of homers with four RBI, and Toronto Blue Jays 1B Vladimir Guerrero has also whacked a pair of homers and 7 RBIs.
For Korea, the big bat has been 1B Bo Gyeong Moon, who is hitting a robust .538 (7-for-13) with 2 doubles, 2 homers and 11 RBIs, posting a gaudy 1.154 SLG and 1.779 OPS. 3B Shay Whitcomb has 2 homers for Korea, too.
The Koreans went just 2-2 in pool play, but managed to clinch the second spot. This game shouldn’t be much of a close contest, as the D.R. is just so deep.
