The New York Islanders are looking to get their first win of the 2025 season on Saturday as they host the Washington Capitals at UBS Arena. New York dropped its season opener 4-3 to the Penguins, while Washington also lost its opener 3-1 to the Bruins. The Islanders ranked 27th in goals per game a season ago and didn’t do much to bolster their forward group over the offseason. They also lost a rock-solid #1 defenseman in Noah Dobson, who is now patrolling the blue line in Montreal. It has been a bumpy road under head coach Patrick Roy, and consistent offense has been hard to come by.

The Capitals got career years from several players last season, as Dylan Strome averaged a point per game over a full 82 games, Aliaksei Protas cracked the 30-goal mark, Tom Wilson scored a career-high 33 goals and Logan Thompson posted an insane 31-6-6 record between the pipes. Most notably, Alexander Ovechkin potted 44 goals in his age-39 season to become the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring leader. With all of those positives, regression could be looming over the Capitals as a whole this season. Everything went a little too perfect for the Caps in 2024-25, and getting all of those individual performances across a full season is simply unrepeatable. Washington scored just 1 goal in the opener and could have another tough time finding the back of the net against Ilya Sorokin, who owns a strong .926 save percentage and 2.22 GAA in his career against the Capitals.
