Money Line Pick
The Chicago Blackhawks are shocking a lot of people in the hockey community right now. After starting their season with four straight losses they’re now third in their division with a solid 10-6-4 record. On the flip side, the Columbus Blue Jackets have been a bit of a disappointment to some fans. After losing their first four of five games, the Jackets still haven’t bounced back and are looking at a mediocre 8-7-5 record. In their last 10 games, Chicago has been one of the hottest teams in the league going 7-2-1 in that stretch, while Columbus has a brutal 4-4-2 record in their last 10. The Hawks’ recent success could be attributed to rookie goaltender Kevin Lankinen. He’s won five of his last seven starts and has an impressive 2.59 GAA and .921 SVP on the season. Chicago might also attribute their recent success to Patrick Kane.
Kane is tied for third in the league in scoring with 30 points in 20 games, including 21 assists. Averaging an assist per game is unbelievable in the NHL, every time he touches the ice he’s a threat to score and he’s also making his teammates better. With Kane’s help, the Blackhawks’ powerplay is best in the league, scoring on 33.3% of chances. Columbus has the fourth worst penalty kill in the NHL, special teams might prove to be the difference maker. Zach Werenski, one of the league’s best defensemen and one of the top players on the Blue Jackets’ roster, is expected to miss this game. That could be detrimental to a Columbus team that has the third worst goals allowed average, allowing 3.4 goals a game. Take the Blackhawks on the money line here.
Game Totals Pick
In five games against each other this season, the over has hit twice while the under has hit three times. Their most recent game was a barn burner that finished with a final score of 6-5, so there’s a chance both teams enter Thursday’s game with more of a defensive mindset. Coaching staffs despise high scoring games, especially veteran coach John Tortorella. Expect the players to tighten up their play, no team can expect to win 6-5 on a nightly basis. Oddsmakers could see Tuesday’s game and undervalue the under, especially considering these teams have hit the under in 60% of their meetings. Proceed with caution because the Hawks have been on fire, but bettors should consider the under here.
