Money Line Pick

This game will be the second half of a back-to-back between these two teams. The Dallas Stars took the first meeting by a score of 3-0. The Florida Panthers largely out-played the Stars. They out-shot them 43-26. If this happens again, I think we will see a different outcome in the game. Shutting the Panthers out is very impressive, but I do not see it happening again. They ranked ninth in the NHL, averaging 3.22 goals for per game. The Panthers’ top forwards in Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau are red-hot this year. They have 19 and 23 points respectively. Keeping them off the score sheet again will be very difficult. Sergei Bobrovsky will be getting the start. He is very close to losing his starting job to back-up Chris Driedger, if he hasn’t already. It is imperative that he has a good game, and I think he will deliver.

The Stars do not pose a huge threat offensively, this is made up for with their solid defensive game. Their team point leader is Joe Pavelski, who has 17 points in 13 games. After Pavelski, there is a significant drop off. The next closest forward to Pavelski is Denis Gurianov, who has only 11 points in his first 13. Jake Oettinger will be getting the start Thursday night. He has been decent this year through five starts, but the Panthers like to shoot the puck, so he will need to be on his game. The Panthers have now put up 52 and 43 shots against the Stars, in two consecutive games. If this trend keeps up, I like the Panthers. Take them on the money line.

Game Totals Pick

Through two meetings so far this season, the under is 2-0. The Stars simply don’t give up a lot of goals. They rank fifth in the NHL, with an average of 2.33 goals against. The Panthers aren’t too bad themselves, ranking tied for 12th. The Stars have showed us that even when they are giving up 40+ shots on goal, they can limit the scoring of opposing teams. With this being a back-to-back, and the third game in four nights for these teams, the players should be a little tired, which may lead them to sit back and play a defensive minded game. The under is offering a little more value than the over, and I will be taking it. Under 5.5 goals in this one.
