NBA Sixth Man of the Year candidates for 2023-24: Who are the favorites?

Later in the article, we will explain the exact process in which the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award is decided. For this section, it’s important to realize that the award is subjective, which means there is no specific measurement to go by. It’s not always the bench player that averages the most points per game that wins the award. This means that it can be difficult to select among the NBA Sixth Man of the Year candidates.

For the purposes of this section, we will consider the NBA Sixth Man of the Year favorites to be those that have NBA Sixth Man of the Year odds of less than +1000. There are two players that fit that description at FanDuel Sportsbook, Norman Powell and Immanuel Quickley.

Norman Powell NBA Sixth Man of the Year Odds

At FanDuel Sportsbook, Norman Powell is +900 to win the NBA Sixth Man of the Year. Powell will be entering his second full season for the Los Angeles Clippers and will be looking to repeat his outstanding 2022-23 season. Powell averaged 17.0 points per game last season and shot 39.7 percent from three. He finished fourth in last year’s Sixth Man of the Year voting, but could certainly take home the award this season.

Immanuel Quickley NBA Sixth Man of the Year Odds

Immanuel Quickley is the co-favorite in the NBA Sixth Man of the Year odds 2023-24, with odds of +900 at FanDuel. Quickley was the runner-up to Malcolm Brogdon for last season’s award after he averaged a career-high 14.9 points per game. The New York Knicks finished with a record of 47-35 last season, good for fifth in the Eastern Conference. If the team is to improve upon that, Immanuel Quickley will have a great chance to be the NBA Sixth Man of the Year.

NBA Sixth Man of the Year Predictions: Who Will Win in 2023-24?

As evidenced by the previous section, the NBA Sixth Man of the Year favorites are deserving of being near the top of the odds, but they are in no way overwhelming favorites. Norman Powell and Immanuel Quickley are the only players listed with odds lower than 10/1 and it is not by much. At FanDuel, there are 13 NBA Sixth Man of the Year candidates with odds between +1100 and +4000. It’s time to make our 2023-24 NBA Sixth Man of the Year predictions.

After examining the NBA Sixth Man of the Year odds 2023-24, we are selecting Bobby Portis at +2100 to win the award. Portis finished third in last year’s voting after averaging 14.1 points per game and a career-high 9.6 rebounds per game for the Milwaukee Bucks. With the recent addition of Damian Lillard, the Bucks could definitely finish with the NBA’s best record for the second year in a row, which would put Portis in a great position to win the award. It’s also possible that the Bucks are dominant in several games this season, which means there’s a chance that Milwaukee’s bench gets more minutes than the benches of other teams.

For example, if the Bucks are up by 25 points entering the 4th quarter, we could see the team rest Giannis Antetokounmpo for the entire quarter. This could mean that Portis is able to boost his stats in garbage time. As mentioned above, Immanuel Quickley finished second in last year’s voting and his NBA Sixth Man of the Year odds are +900. Portis finished third, but his odds are +2100.

NBA Sixth Man of the Year 2023-24: Long-shot candidates to watch

With NBA Sixth Man of the Year odds 2023-24 of +2100, you could make the case that Bobby Portis would qualify as a long-shot candidate. However, there are a few other NBA Sixth Man of the Year candidates to watch with odds even greater than that. With NBA Sixth Man of the Year odds of +4000, Denver’s Christian Braun could be worthy of a long-shot bet. Braun averaged just 4.7 points per game last year, but it was just his rookie season. If Braun’s minutes increase from the 15.5 per game last season, which is likely following the loss of Bruce Brown in free agency, his stats could make a big jump. It is also helpful that he will be playing alongside Nikola Jokic as a member of the defending NBA Champions.

Another NBA Sixth Man of the Year candidate is Kelly Oubre Jr., whose odds are +3500. Oubre Jr. averaged an impressive 20.2 points per game last season for the Charlotte Hornets. This likely went unnoticed since the Hornets finished with a record of 27-55, but Oubre Jr. now joins the Philadelphia 76ers, who should be much better.

How we make our NBA Sixth Man of the Year 2023-24 predictions

As mentioned earlier, it can be hard to predict the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award. This is due to a few reasons, with the first being that it is a group of voters that decides who wins the award. Another reason is that you can’t predict injuries, which could have a big impact on the award. For example, if a team’s starter goes down early in the season, a sixth man could be inserted into the starting lineup, which would make it difficult to win this award.

The way that we make our NBA Sixth Man of the Year predictions is by first looking at players on teams that are on good teams. It’s unusual for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year to be on a team with a losing record, so that can eliminate several NBA Sixth Man of the Year candidates. We also look at opportunity, specifically teams that tend to play their bench more than others.

Our 2023-24 NBA Sixth Man of the Year prediction was Bobby Portis at +2100. Portis is on what could be the NBA’s best team this season and Milwaukee ranked fifth in bench minutes last season.

How the NBA Sixth Man of the Year is decided

The NBA Sixth Man of the Year award is determined by a voting process among a group of sportswriters from the US and Canada. Each voter issues a first, second, and third-place vote to help determine the winner of the award. Each first-place vote is worth five points, a second-place vote is worth three points, and the third-place vote is worth one point. The player that receives the highest total number of points is the winner of the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award. The award has been given out in every season since the 1982-83 season.

Trends & Statistics for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year

We’ve mentioned a few times now that the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award is determined by a subjective voting process. This makes it more difficult to find specific trends, but there are a few things that stand out among recent winners. In 11 of the past 12 seasons, a guard has won the award. Perhaps that is partially why Norman Powell and Immanuel Quickley are listed as the NBA Sixth Man of the Year favorites.

A few statistics that could be relevant are what constitutes a Sixth Man, as this award is not given to starters. The most games started by a Sixth Man was 35 games back in 2010-11 when Lamar Odom won the award. Odom was filling in for injured starter Andrew Bynum, so perhaps that was taken into account by the voters. The most minutes averaged by a winner was 33.7 by Jason Terry back in 2008-09.
