Best New Jersey Sports Betting Promo Codes & Bonuses

When gambling in New Jersey or anywhere for that matter, you should always try and make the most of your experience. With New Jersey betting sites, that means taking advantage of any promo codes and bonuses that are available.

Each sportsbook will offer its own range of bonuses. While some may share similarities, others will really strive to stand apart from competitors with enticing, stand-out features. The ultimate key is to find which bonuses work best for the way you bet.

A common bonus you may find is a deposit match. This is where a sportsbook will match the amount you deposit to a certain limit. You also have bet insurance offers like Caesars’ promo bet or PointsBet’s second-chance offers. These are great, especially for beginners because if your bet loses, you get another chance to place a bet by being given bet credit.

We’ll let you in on a little secret too. If you can’t decide on which promo code to use with a sportsbook or like the look of multiple bonuses, guess what? You can claim them all because there is no limit to how many New Jersey sports betting sites you can join. This not only lets you take advantage of all the different bonuses but it means you can shop the odds and choose to bet with the sportsbook offering the best odds on your chosen selections.

It’s not just about new customer bonuses, though, as there are many ongoing promotions across all the NJ sports betting sites. You can get odds boosts on selected events and parlay insurance where you get your wager back as bet credits if one line lets you down. And again, if you join multiple New Jersey sportsbooks, then you can take advantage of all the promotions you want.

How To Bet Sports Online In New Jersey

As we promised, it’s time to talk you through how you place a bet. Again, while many sportsbooks that offer gambling in New Jersey have different systems, they all work in practically the same way. So, you may find that the wording differs slightly from operator to operator, but this guide should walk you through successfully placing a bet at any NJ sports betting site:

  1. Find the event you wish to bet on.
  2. Pick your selections.
  3. Open your bet slip.
  4. Enter how much you would like to wager.
  5. Click “Place Bet”.

If you have made the most of your experience and managed to get some promotions, then you may want to know how to use them. So, here’s another quick guide to help:

  1. Pick your selections as normal.
  2. Open your bet slip but don’t enter a wager amount.
  3. You should see “bet credits or bonus” on the bottom of your slip.
  4. Click on it to reveal the bonuses you have and select one.
  5. The wager amount will automatically populate.
  6. Click “Place Bet”.

Legal New Jersey Sports Betting Legislation Timeline

Sports betting was legalized pretty quickly when the federal law changed in 2018, but it was in 2016 when the state first tried to legalize it. Here is a timeline surrounding the sports betting legislation in New Jersey:

  1. 2011: A voter referendum is held on the decision to legalize sports betting in the state. The vote is in favor of legalization.
  2. 2012: Sports betting is legalized in the state but the NCAA, NBA, NFL and NHL all launched lawsuits against the state preventing its law from passing.
  3. 2013 – 2017: Years of fighting lawsuits to try and legalize sports betting in NJ.
  4. 2018: The US Supreme Court finds in favor of the state and declares sports betting can be legalized and governed at the state level. Retail sports betting launches in June, with online sports betting launching in August.
  5. 2019: The first full year with legalized sports betting saw the year start with bets handled eclipsing $250 million per month. By the end of the year (November and December), the bets handled surpassed $500 million.
  6. 2020: COVID-19 hits the industry with retail sportsbooks having to shut down and sporting events canceled.
  7. 2021: Regular service resumes and bet handled exceeds $1 billion for the first time. At the same time, legislation to change the sports betting laws to allow in-state college sports betting fails.
  8. 2022: The sports betting handle declines following New York’s legalization of sports betting. This causes many sportsbooks in New Jersey to close operations. Although new ones also appeared with Fubo and Prophet Exchange both launching in the state.

Can You Bet in Person In New Jersey?

Yes, you can bet in person in New Jersey. In fact, retail sportsbooks were the first operations to launch in New Jersey in June 2018 following the change in federal law that same year. However, unlike some states where sports betting kiosks are allowed to be posted in bars, convenience stores and other locations, in New Jersey, retail sportsbooks can only operate at one of three race tracks or nine Atlantic City casinos.

New Jersey Retail Sportsbook Locations

Here is a list of the most popular retail sportsbooks and where you can find them:

Monmouth Park

Can You Bet On College Sports In New Jersey?

You can bet on college sports that take place outside of New Jersey, but you can not bet on any in-state teams or any college sports events happening in the state. Activists tried to get legislation amended in 2021, to allow the expansion of college sports betting to end the current restrictions, but 57% of voters opposed the amendment.

As it stands, you can only bet on professional sports and college sports out of state that do not involve an in-state team.

Betting On New Jersey Teams

Being so close to New York, the situation about professional sports teams in New Jersey is a strange one. This is because there are a handful of New York teams that actually play in New Jersey but they identify as a New York team. There is even a women’s soccer team that is called different names by residents of each state known to locals as either NJ/NY Gotham FC.

Here is a full list of professional sports teams in the state, the league they play in and at what stadium they play their home games:

New Jersey Teams

New Jersey DevilsNHL – National Hockey LeaguePrudential Center
Metropolitan RivetersPHF – Premier Hockey FederationThe Risk at American Dream
NJ/NY Gotham FCNational Women’s Soccer LeagueRed Bull Arena

New York Metropolitan Teams That Play In New Jersey

  • New York Giants (NFL – National Football League) – MetLife Stadium
  • New York Jets (NFL – National Football League) – MetLife Stadium
  • New York Red Bulls (MLS – Major League Soccer) – Red Bull Arena

NFL Betting in New Jersey

The New York Giants have eight titles to their name, while the New York Jets have just one. So, if you were to bet on one of these NFL teams to win the Super Bowl based on past history, the Giants would be the favorite every time. However, despite playing in the same stadium, they don’t always play each other as they are in different divisions, the Giants in the NFC East and the Jets in the AFC East.

No matter who they face, though, you can be sure to find money line bets available as well as a range of points spreads bets and totals. You’ll also find many prop bets available such as who the first scorer of a touchdown will be.

NHL Betting in New Jersey

The New Jersey Devils have three Stanley Cups to their name, winning them in 1995, 200 and most recently in 2003. With such a drought to winning a championship, nothing compared to the Toronto Maple Leafs though, it’s unlikely you’ll wager on them with a futures bet for the championship. But you could if you wanted to.

You can also bet on a range of NHL markets from simple bets like the money line to building same-game parlays which could incorporate prop bets like which player you think will score first.

Soccer Betting in New Jersey

When it comes to teams based in New Jersey, it is the women who have seen the only title return to the Garden State and Gotham FC was established 13 years after the NY Red Bulls. A little embarrassing for the men.

Soccer has some of the most diverse markets, both in the men’s and women’s games. You will find a range of bets from a money line three-way as the games can end in a tie and you can also bet on individual halves. You can wager who will have the most corners, which players will receive a card and if a team will be awarded a penalty. There is so much availability you’ll struggle to remember all the different bets available.

Who Can Bet On Sports In New Jersey?

You can bet in New Jersey legally if you are aged 21 or over. You do not need to reside in the state, but must be located within state lines to place a bet.

Do You Have To Pay Sports Betting Taxes On Winnings In New Jersey?

Yes, you do have to pay taxes on any winnings you get from sports betting in New Jersey. However, you can offset your winnings with gambling losses from the same year, but you cannot record a negative balance. If you have lost more than you have won, you need to claim zero income from winnings. It is your responsibility to record this accurately and truthfully.
