La Liga Schedule 2021

Like most sports and leagues around the world, La Liga was suspended for three months during the Covid-19 pandemic during the 2019-2020 season. A typical La Liga schedule sees the Spanish football season run from mid-August to late May, with a winter break across the Christmas and New Year period.

The 2019-20 La Liga season resumed on the 11th of June and finished with game week 38 played on 19th July, almost two months later than initially scheduled. As such, the 2020/21 season has to been delayed, with La Liga announcing that the opening fixtures of the 2020/21 season will be played on the 12th of September. The end of the 2020-21 La Liga season is still scheduled for the end of May, with the final games set to be played on the 23rd of May 2021.

Who Has Won The Most La Liga Titles

The 2020-21 season is the 90th season in La Liga history with the league’s inception 91 years ago in 1929. Thee seasons were canceled between 1936-39 as a result of the Spanish Civil War.

La Liga has been dominated by Real Madrid and Barcelona from the outset, with Real Madrid leading the way with 34 La Liga titles and Barcelona a few behind with 26, these two Spanish giants have combined to win 67% of the La Liga titles on offer.

Barcelona, led by the indomitable Lionel Messi has been the dominant force over the last decade or so, being crowned La Liga champions in seven of the last 11 seasons. The other four have been won by either of the two Madrid outfits in Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

Aside from La Liga’s big two teams, Atletico Madrid has won the third-most La Liga titles with 10, most recently in 2013-14, and Athletic Bilbao follows them with 8 but hasn’t won a La Liga title since 1983–84.
