The Purdue Boilermakers and the Gonzaga Bulldogs will meet on Monday night in Las Vegas for game one 2026-27 season. Both Purdue and Gonzaga won a NCAA Tournament last March and will look to prove that they are top teams in the sport again this year with a Quad-1 win on opening night.
Gonzaga’s expectations are higher than Purdue’s going into the year with Purdue losing their four-year backcourt, but I am going to back Purdue to keep this one close and cover the spread. Gonzaga has multiple key players back from last year and will look to make a further run in the big dance than the past two seasons, but Purdue usually over-performs their preseason expectations, led by head coach Matt Painter. The Boilermakers are expected to take a step back from last year with the graduation of Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer and Trey Kauffman-Renn, but they still should be one of the best teams in the Big Ten.
Purdue will return CJ Cox, Daniel Jacobsen, Gicarri Harris, Jack Benter and Omer Mayer, who should take a step forward with another year of experience, and I trust Painter to put them in a position to succeed. Their defense might struggle to begin the year, but their offense should be able to compete with the top teams in the country like Gonzaga.
Gonzaga should be the best team in the new PAC-12 and will be one of the best teams in the country, as usual, this year, led by big man Braden Huff. Huff will likely be the best player in this matchup, so Purdue big man Daniel Jacobsen will need to play tough for them to cover the short spread. Jacobsen is entering his third season at Purdue and will be relied upon heavily with the departure of Trey Kaufmann-Renn. He is seven-foot-four and should be able to provide rim protection all year for a Purdue defense.
The Boilermakers will likely try to slow the game down and control the pace while the Bulldogs usually like to push the pace, and I believe that favors Purdue. I expect both teams to put the ball in the basket at a high-level, with the Boilers doing just enough to stay within the number.
