An important early season ACC contest is set to kick off college football this Saturday when the North Carolina Tar Heels take on the Clemson Tigers. North Carolina is currently 2-0 this season after victories against TCU and Eastern Tennessee State. North Carolina’s defense has been impressive at keeping their opponent off the scoreboard. They have only allowed their opponents to score on average 6.5 points per game through the first two weeks. In comparison, Clemson has started 1-1 and their offense has struggled during the first two weeks. They lost 51-10 against LSU, and then won 22-7 over Georgia Southern in their last game. Clemson’s offense has been one of the worst units in the country through the first two weeks. They are only averaging 2.92 yards per rush and 5.3 yards per pass attempt. As a result, this line has plummeted from opening at -9.5 in favor of the Tigers, to now -3.5. On top of that, starting quarterback Christopher Vizzina is expected to miss this game with an elbow injury. While injuries are never good, I’m not necessarily taking this as bad news for the Tigers. Vizzina has struggled heavily to start the season. So much so that his backup, now moved to starter this weekend, Tait Reynolds, has gotten meaningful playing time in both of the opening contests. Reynolds has looked solid, completing 60% of his passes, and he shouldn’t be a fully inexperienced option ahead of his first start. Reynolds will have to try and find success against a Tar Heels defense that has kept their opponents out of the end zone this season. Despite the low points allowed total, I’m not yet fully sold on North Carolina’s defense as an elite unit. North Carolina has allowed opponents to convert on third down 47% of the time this season. If North Carolina cannot get off the field, their defense is in line to be worn down against what is expected to be a run-heavy Clemson attack. Clemson has struggled to start this season, but Memorial Stadium in Clemson is still a very difficult place to go in and get a win. I expect Reynolds and Clemson to get the job done on their home field this weekend.

Clemson -3.5 is available at the time of publishing. Playable at that number.
