Indiana has scored 52 and 55 points this season, so an under on the defending national champions takes some explaining. Most of the explanation is on the other side of the ball. Under 60.5 is at DraftKings and BetMGM at -105, the best price available, and BetRivers is a point shorter at 59.5.
Indiana's defense is doing half the work. The Hoosiers have allowed 16 points in two games, including a shutout of Howard, at under four yards a play, and neither opponent threw a touchdown pass. Western Kentucky is averaging 17 points and fewer than four yards a play of its own, so for this to go over, Indiana likely has to clear 50 by itself.
Indiana's pace makes that harder than it sounds. The Hoosiers are averaging only 54 offensive plays a game because their games are decided early, and against Howard the two staffs agreed before kickoff to shorten the fourth quarter to ten minutes. Fewer snaps means fewer possessions, and fewer possessions caps a total no matter how porous the defense across the field has been.
Indiana's own games split on this number, 68 against North Texas and 55 against Howard. Public projections cluster around 55, roughly five points below it. The market has pushed this total up from 59.5 to 60.5 this week, which is the honest caution, but every step up has moved it further from where those projections expect the game to land.
Western Kentucky vs Indiana prediction: Under 60.5 (-105) available at time of publishing. Playable to that number.
