Northern Iowa vs Iowa Prediction, Odds and NCAAF Picks for Saturday, 09/19/26

The Iowa Hawkeyes defeated their in-state rivals, Iowa State, last week 16-13. The Hawkeyes will remain home to take on another in-state opponent this week, the Northern Iowa Panthers. Iowa is newly ranked as the 18th best team in the nation heading into this game. Iowa’s identity, like years past, is to win with their defense. It has been common to expect that head coach Kirk Ferentz’s team is going to control field position with their running game and defense. That’s what makes this line concerning. The concern is not can Iowa easily beat an FCS school? My main concern is will the Hawkeyes offense even score enough points to reach this spread? Iowa took on a similar opponent to Northern Iowa to start the season, Northern Illinois. Iowa won the game 40-0 and held Northern Illinois to only 120 yards of offense. Quarterback Hank Brown started the game, but we eventually saw Jeremy Hecklinski and Jimmy Sullivan get a large chunk of playing time. I expect a similar script for not only the quarterbacks, but the entire Iowa offense and defense in this game with a game against Michigan coming up next week. Northern Iowa will be looking to put some points on the scoreboard against the big school from their state, and I believe they have the offense to score at least once in this game. Quarterback Jaxon Dailey has been exceptional under center this season for the Panthers. He threw for 287 yards with a 71% completion percentage against Eastern Washington, and he threw for another 242 yards and 3 touchdowns against Drake last week. I don’t see Iowa running their score up in the high 40s, so any points scored by Northern Iowa could make this spread difficult to cover.
