Apparently, this is a rivalry game, but you could have fooled me looking at the point spread. Nevertheless, there's plenty to like about the team from Annapolis catching 30.5 points. Last week's thrashing at the hands of North Texas certainly doesn't help Navy's cause, but that's the beauty of this number. The Midshipmen haven't looked particularly good lately, while Notre Dame sits inside the Top 5 with national championship aspirations. That combination has created what I believe is an inflated spread. So how does Navy stay inside this lofty number? Simple. Just do what it does best.
The Midshipmen lean heavily into their option attack, running the football, retaining possession, and bleeding the clock. That's no secret but the fewer possessions Notre Dame gets, the harder it becomes for the Irish to build the kind of margin required to cover this range. And here's the interesting part: Notre Dame likes to establish the run itself. If both teams are content to keep the football on the ground, the clock becomes Navy's biggest ally. The Midshipmen don't need to match Notre Dame score for score. They simply need to sustain drives, limit explosive plays, and prevent the Irish from turning this into a track meet. Notre Dame can win comfortably without winning by 31. And even if Notre Dame puts up 40 on the Mids, a junk-time score or two opens the backdoor. There are too many possibilities for the Naval Academy to stay under the line. I'm backing Navy because this smells like an overlay.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Navy Midshipmen prediction: Navy +30.5 (-102) available at time of publishing. Playable to +30.
