2022 Premier Lacrosse League Betting Preview: PLL Futures strategy and best bets

The 2022 Premier Lacrosse League season is officially upon us, with opening weekend kicking off on Saturday in Albany, New York. Entering its fourth year since launching, the PLL has grown significantly to establish itself as the top destination for professional outdoor lacrosse. The league has added two expansion teams, signed a new broadcast deal with ESPN, and most critically for us now has more betting options offered at sportsbooks.

Operators provide more lines for team futures, player props and player futures for the upcoming season. Here are my favorite team and player futures bets for the 2022 Premier Lacrosse League season.

Premier Lacrosse League Betting Strategy

Before delving into what I personally will take for bets this year, it is important to evaluate how each award has been won in the past.

For starters, the PLL is a league filled with all-star teams and no one is “bad” on paper. Imagine taking all of the best players in the NBA dividing them into eight teams. Any team can win any game, which is the beauty of the league. What winning ultimately comes down to is continuity and cohesion in teams, along with superstars who can take over games in whatever way necessary.

Also worth noting, the Jim Brown MVP Award isn’t like the NFL in the sense that it is awarded to the best player regardless of finish in the standings. Every MVP recipient in the PLL has come from the team that has won the championship.

All that being said, these are my favorite picks for the 2022 season.

Premier Lacrosse League – PLL Championship Best Bet: Redwoods +550

I believe that this is the Redwoods’ year. The Redwoods have lost by one goal in the playoffs to the Whipsnakes in all three seasons so far, including an overtime loss in the 2019 championship. The mainstays on this team of Garrett Epple (D), Myles Jones (M), Sergio Perkovic (M), Matt Kavanaugh (A) and Tim Troutner (G) have been together since the team’s formation in 2019. Cohesion on all levels of the field shouldn’t be a worry for them going into the year.

Faceoff specialist T.D. Ierlan was tied for the league lead in winning percentage (65%) last season. He can easily tilt the field in their favor and take over any game. Superstar attackman Rob Panell has been one of the best players in professional lacrosse since he burst onto the scene in 2013. Myles Jones and Sergio Perkovic are perhaps the best one-two punch at the midfield position in the entire league.

The Redwoods have all the ingredients to win a championship this season and with the fifth-highest odds on the board at +550, the value can’t be overlooked.

Premier Lacrosse League MVP Best Bet: Myles Jones (+800)

Given that the MVP will likely come from the championship-winning team, the key is to look for the player on the Redwoods that puts up the best statistics. Myles Jones was tied for second in the league in points and solo second in assists last season as a midfielder. For those who don’t know, attackmen generally accrue the most points in lacrosse, not midfielders. To put it into perspective, Jones was the only midfielder in the top six for total points and assists of all players in 2021. The Redwoods offense goes as Myles Jones goes. If they can secure a championship this year, Jones, at 8-1 is the best value bet for this award.
