The PGA Championship is a week away and the PGA Tour’s elite finalize their preparations at the Truist Championship, which returns to its traditional Quail Hollow Club home. World #1 Scottie Scheffler is absent, so 4-time Quail Hollow hero Rory McIlroy tops the betting on his first start since his successful defense of the Masters. McIlroy is always the starting point when it comes to Quail Hollow, the course where he made his PGA Tour breakthrough back in 2010 when this event was known as the Wells Fargo. However, he’s made it clear that winning more Major championships is his sole priority, and this North Carolina outing will be geared towards ensuring he’s at his sharpest ahead of Aronimink in a week’s time.
Cameron Young dazzled at the Cadillac Championship at Doral last week and, alongside Matt Fitzpatrick, is among the most in-form players on the PGA Tour. He tees it up again in the Truist but will surely have one eye on how he can make the leap in Majors. Let’s break down my golf predictions for this week’s Truist Championship.

Others will be targeting an end to longer winless runs, and this represents a big opportunity for Xander Schauffele to claim his first title of the year. While not quite on a par with McIlroy’s Quail Hollow record, Schauffele has shown he can handle this bomber-friendly layout, finishing runner-up in both the 2023 and 2024 Wells Fargo events.
After a slow start to the campaign, the 32-year-old has done little wrong in recent outings, posting PGA Tour form figures of 19-7-24-3-4-9-12 from Pebble Beach onwards, and he’ll be keen to return to the winner’s circle on the eve of a Major. Above average off the tee and a superb iron player, Schauffele does everything well and is one of the more rested players in the field after sensibly opting to skip the Doral test.

Justin Thomas could only finish 23rd at Doral, but his ball-striking was impressive over the weekend rounds and he will relish a return to the scene of his 2017 PGA Championship victory.

Gary Woodland and Max Homa also appeal on the back of their strong Quail Hollow records. Woodland, an emotional winner of the Houston Open in March, was 8th at the Heritage and has finished in the top 25 at Quail on 6 occasions, including 2 top-5 efforts.

Homa is a 2-time tournament winner, with one of those victories coming at Quail in 2019, and he finished 8th in both the 2023 and 2024 editions of the Wells Fargo. He was 9th at the Masters and may not be far away from a return to his best.
