Thursday is a calm before the weekend storm in the MLB. There are just 4 matchups today with a day game and then 3 at night. Friday will be back to a loaded schedule with 16 games as the Cubs and Reds will play a doubleheader. As the calendar turns to September tomorrow, there is still plenty that needs to be worked out in the standings. Today is just an appetizer but the highlight is a heavyweight Braves vs Dodgers tilt.

Washington Nationals ML over Miami Marlins (+136)

The Marlins have not done themselves any favors in the playoff race. Mathematically, they are still very much in the hunt for the wild card at 3 games back. But the way they are playing could eliminate them from contention sooner rather than later. Since August 15, the Marlins are 3-10 including a series loss to this Nationals team. Granted, the Marlins did have to face the Astros, Dodgers and Rays during that span, but if they are a true playoff team, they would still have to show more.

The Nationals have been all but completely eliminated since soon after Opening Day, but they are playing great baseball. They are 12-6 in their last 18 games and 8-2 in their last 10 at home. They are not better than the Marlins, but they have been in much better form for a longer stretch of games. Miami has lost the last 2 starts of today’s starter Braxton Garrett while Washington has won all 4 August games in which today’s starter Joan Adon appeared.

Los Angeles Dodgers ML over Atlanta Braves & Under 8.5 (+250)

In sports betting, you often have to take a stand with a pick that may make you feel uncomfortable due to the opportunity cost. If you are going to bet this game, it may make you feel a little uneasy as it could go either way. However, the scales may be ever so slightly tipped in favor of the Dodgers. They get the benefit of home field and Lance Lynn has been fantastic since joining the Dodgers.

The starting pitching matchup is the primary reason the under also looks good in this one. Lynn has had a great month to the tune of a 4-0 record with a 1.70 ERA. His counterpart tonight, Spencer Strider, has gone 7 innings in each of his last 3 starts while allowing just 1 total run. Strider has as much upside as arguably any starting pitcher in baseball. This one has the makings of a pitchers’ duel in a game that could go down to the wire.
