Cincinnati Reds -1.5 (-125) over Colorado Rockies

The Cincinnati Reds are the hottest team in baseball and have surpassed the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the NL Central standings. With another win last night, the Reds extended their winning streak to 10 games while the opposing Colorado Rockies have now dropped 7 straight. This afternoon presents another opportunity favorable to the Reds as left-hander Andrew Abbott takes the ball opposite right-hander Connor Seabold of the Rockies. Abbott has been a huge asset for Cincinnati, and he has already accomplished something no other pitcher has — which is to begin his career with 3 scoreless starts of at least 5.0 innings. Those 3 starts total out to a combined 17.2 scoreless innings, and I’m not going to bet against him now.

Seabold is in the middle of his 3rd MLB season, spending his first 2 years in Boston — but has only tossed 78 innings as a big leaguer in total. This season has called for an increase in his role, but the results have not been overly encouraging. Through 9 starts and 16 total appearances, Seabold owns a 5.88 ERA, a 1.48 WHIP and a strikeout rate in the 13th percentile. Seabold was moved to the rotation at the beginning of May and has since given up 9 homers, including 4 against the Braves in his last start. With a pair of relatively inexperienced pitchers on the mound, I’m going to back Abbott and the Reds to pick up another win and extend the streak to 11.

Washington Nationals ML (+144) over St. Louis Cardinals

Many would argue that the Cardinals are a much better team than their record suggests, but in the words of legendary NFL coach Bill Parcells, “you are what your record says you are,” and St. Louis is 31-43 even after winning their last 4 games. Miles Mikolas was the starting pitcher for the Cardinals the last time they lost a game and he will be taking the mound this afternoon for his 16th start of the season. This season has been a combination of the highest of highs and the lowest of lows for Mikolas, without much in between. Mikolas pitched to a 5.08 ERA in April, 1.89 ERA in May and now a 6.88 ERA through 3 starts in June — accounting for 13 earned runs on 25 hits.

Trevor Williams takes the ball for Washington and — in all honestly — he hasn’t been much better. Through 14 starts he owns a 4.50 ERA on the year and a 6.60 ERA across 3 starts in June. Unlike Mikolas, who is in the bottom 50th percentile of every category other than walks rate, Williams at least has an above average hard-hit rate and chase rate that’s helped him at times. The Nats have only won 2 of their last 13 games, but this pitching matchup is about as even as it gets. I’m giving Washington a fighting chance at home and will play them on the money line.

Texas Rangers -1.5 (+140) over Chicago White Sox

The Texas Rangers will look to bounce back tonight after a controversial overturned call last night that allowed the Chicago White Sox to pick up the victory. That call came in the bottom of the 8th inning with 2 outs and Elvis Andrus representing the go-ahead run on second base. Zach Remillard lined a single to left fielder Travis Jankowski, who subsequently delivered a perfect strike home to catcher Jonah Heim, who then applied the tag and nabbed Andrus before touching home plate. The call on the field was out without much debate, but Chicago had a challenge in its back pocket and it was basically use it or lose it. To everyone’s surprise, replay officials overturned the call – not because Andrus beat the tag – but because Heim violated the slide rule. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy was rightfully displeased and quickly ejected after arguing the call. Bochy went on to describe the call as “one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen, and it was done by replay.”

For the Rangers, they have to forget about it and move on to the next. Tonight they have lefty Martin Perez on the mound, as he looks to build off a great start against the Blue Jays his last time out. Perez allowed just 2 earned runs across 6.0 innings, with his only blemish coming in the top of the 5th inning in the form of a leadoff walk followed by a 2-run homer off the bat of Danny Jansen. For Perez, it was the 10th time this season he went at least 5.0 innings while allowing 3 runs or fewer. Michael Kopech will have the starting assignment for the White Sox tonight and is pitching to a 3.92 ERA over 14 starts, and a 2.41 ERA over his last 9 outings. While Kopech has pitched well of late, the Rangers have one of the most potent lineups in baseball. Texas ranks 1st in batting average, 1st in runs scored, 3rd in OPS and Corey Seager is hitting .427 with 17 extra-base hits in June. Thirteen of the last 14 wins by the Rangers have come by multiple runs, so I’ll back them on the run line.
