NBA Heat vs Celtics Best Bets for Friday, May 19 from Pickswise expert handicapper Mark Zinno

Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler

It’s another big night in the NBA playoffs as the Boston Celtics set out to put things right after losing Game 1 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals at home to the Miami Heat. I have picked out 3 plays I like for Game 2, so without further ado, I’ll get into the reasoning behind those Heat vs Celtics picks.

Heat +10 (-110, Caesars)

I haven’t been able to figure out the Miami Heat this entire postseason, and I’ve stayed away from betting them for the most part. What they are doing defies a lot of explanation other than simply that they’ve been a completely different team in the playoffs. From a league-worst 109 points per game in the regular season they are scoring 114 points per game in the playoffs. A bottom-5 three-point shooting team in the regular season at 34.4% has been draining 37.8% of shots from downtown in the playoffs. Make it make sense!

The Heat have lost only 3 games so far in this postseason (plus a play-in loss to the Hawks). Those losses were by 16 to Milwaukee and then 6 and 9 to the Knicks. I get why oddsmakers have left this number as high as it is with the Celtics now laying 9.5 to 10 points. That said, I’m still not interested in laying the points. Miami doesn’t get blown out often, so I’ll take the points with the Heat.

Heat team total over 102.5 points (-110, DraftKings)

Game total over 214.5 points (-115, BetMGM)

The totals for the Miami Heat have been all over the place. This number is the highest we’ve seen since their series against the Bucks. The Heat are 9-3 to the over so far in this postseason because they’ve been able to score at a rate that hasn’t been consistent with their regular-eason numbers. I keep waiting for Miami to have that really bad offensive game and it just hasn’t happened.

I’ve been wrong a lot on the totals with Miami in this postseason. But I’m not going to go against what I’ve seen so far. Miami is shooting well from the field and from deep. Whatever they’ve figured out is working for them. I’m not going to try to fight it. Miami has scored fewer than 105 points only twice in these playoffs – and they won one of those games against the Knicks. I think they can go over their team total of 102.5 and I’ll also take the game to go over the posted total of 214.5.
