College basketball pick today: Houston Cougars vs Cincinnati Bearcats – Under 136 points (-110), 3:00 pm ET

The under is the play in this matchup because Houston boasts one of the best defenses in all of college basketball and plays at an extremely slow pace. Cincinnati is one of the best teams at taking care of the basketball, but I do not see the Bearcats scoring in the half court at a consistent rate.

According to KenPom, Houston is ranked #2 in adjusted defensive efficiency, effective field goal percentage and 3-point percentage. The Cougars are giving up just 51 points per game this season and the Bearcats simply do not have the talent to score enough points. I expect Houston to control the pace, as well, and really slow the game down to give them an advantage. The Cougars are ranked #343 in adjusted tempo, therefore backing the under will be the play.

NHL pick today: Pittsburgh Penguins 3-Way ML over Arizona Coyotes (-140), 7:07 pm ET

The Pittsburgh Penguins travel to Arizona to take on the Coyotes in their 2nd meeting of the season. Pittsburgh is 3-5-2 in its last 10 games and have lost 3 in a row. The Pens’ 3 losses have come against Vegas, Boston and New Jersey. They were competitive in each game, but they failed to score goals and couldn’t keep the puck out of their own net.

Arizona on the other hand, is 3-6-1 in their last 10 games and have lost 4 in a row. The Coyotes have played much better on home ice, but it’s not enough to back them in this matchup. For that reason backing the Penguins to win in regulation will be the play.

NBA pick today: Minnesota Timberwolves -2.5 over Houston Rockets (-110), 7:10 pm ET

The Minnesota Timberwolves are on a 3-game winning streak as they go on the road to face a struggling Houston Rockets team that is on a 6-game losing streak. During the Rockets’ skid they have lost by double-digits in 5 out of the 6 games. They have allowed teams to score close to 121 points per game in the past 6 games which ranks in the bottom 5 in that span. Offensively, they are 2nd-worst in both points per game at 105 points and field-goal percentage at 42%. Given how both teams have been performing recently, backing the Timberwolves to win and cover will be the play.

NFL pick today: Green Bay Packers -5 over Detroit Lions (-110), 8:20 pm ET

No one would have thought that the Packers would be in this spot 5 weeks ago. But in the last 4 weeks, Aaron Rodgers and the offense have scored 30 points a game and the Green Bay defense has allowed only 17 per game. I expect the Green Bay defense to continue to play well with the playoffs on the line. Plus, Aaron Rodgers has the highest quarterback rating in NFL history in primetime games at 106.8 and had won 13 consecutive primetime games until losing at Buffalo this season. Given what is on the line for the Packers, backing them to win and cover will be the play.
