Super Bowl LVI opening lines and market analysis: Is this where the Bengals fairytale ends?

Championship Sunday did not disappoint. Two double-digit comebacks and two thrilling finishes, setting up a Rams/Bengals Super Bowl. The Westgate Superbook was the first shop I saw to reopen the Super Bowl line, installing the Rams as a 3.5-point favorite and the total at 50.

DraftKings had a stronger opinion on the Rams, opening a little higher at -4.5. From there, the market settled in between, with mostly 4’s across the board as of late Sunday night generating good two-way action.

“We think that’s the number,” said Westgate SuperBook Risk Supervisor Rex Beyers. “The numbers are pretty cut and dry and we’re not dealing with anything key with the line between 3.5 and 4, barring some sort of injury.”

Oddsmakers expect the early action to trend like it has for most Super Bowls, which is public money on the favorite against the spread and the underdog on the money line. That could set up a buying opportunity on the Rams money line, similar to what we saw with Georgia in the National Championship game.

“When the number is 4, generally speaking, the money line should be -190, but we are at -185, building in a Bengals tax,” added Beyers.

Price action aside, my early handicap on the game also skews towards the Rams, as they have a big edge in the trenches, especially against Cincinnati’s offensive line. “The Bengals magic surely has to be running out,” said TwinSpires Trading Analyst Zachary Lucas. “Burrow will be running for his life.”

For that reason, I also am leaning to the under, and will be looking for good under spots in the props market as well. Considering we have almost two weeks until Super Bowl Sunday, I am in no rush to get heavily involved with anything, and will continue to closely monitor the market for now.
