Carabao Cup soccer pick today: Southampton vs Newcastle – Under 2.5 goals (-155), 3:00 pm ET

Newcastle has not been as fluent offensively since the EPL’s World Cup break, although the Magpies have maintained their outstanding defensive standards and last weekend’s goalless tie at Crystal Palace was their 9th shutout in 10 games.

Southampton remains bottom of the EPL standings after Saturday’s 1-0 home loss to Aston Villa and it is hard to see the Saints’ forwards causing many problems for Newcastle. However, they have played better in cup competitions this season and landed a +1400 odds upset in the quarterfinals of this competition by beating Manchester City 2-0. City didn’t have a shot on target in that game and Newcastle, whose last 6 games include 3 scoreless draws, may be kept quieter than in the league game at Southampton. For that reason, under 2.5 goals will be the play this afternoon.

College Basketball pick today: Ohio State Buckeyes vs Illini Fighting Illini – Over 144.5 points (-115), 7:00 pm ET

Illinois plays at a fast pace, ranking 65th in adjusted tempo and 59th in average possession length with an adjusted offensive efficiency that ranks 47th per KenPom. The Illini average 79.3 points per game at home – which is about 7 points higher than they average on the road – and before their loss to Indiana, the Illini had 4-straight performances with at least 75 points against Big Ten opponents.

While Ohio State does not play as fast as Illinois, the Buckeyes do not seem to have an issue playing up-tempo if needed. Overall, the Buckeyes rank 7th in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency and 4th in BartTorvik’s while scoring an average of 73.8 points per game on the road. For that reason, backing the over will be the play tonight.

NHL pick today: Boston Bruins -1.5 over Montreal Canadiens (-150), 7:07 pm ET

The Boston Bruins start out on a 5-game road trip tonight when they play the Montreal Canadiens. The Bruins are on an absolute tear, 9-1-0 in their last 10 games and with a 14-point lead on the Maple Leafs for 1st in the Atlantic Division. The Canadiens, on the other hand, have been treading water, going 5-5-0 in their last 10 games, but they are still in the basement of the Atlantic Division a full 35 points behind the Bruins.

The Bruins are relentless on the back end as they limit scoring chances, ranking 2nd in expected goals against. This tough defense has led the Bruins to being the best team at keeping the puck out of the net, as they are allowing only 1.40 goals against per game since the beginning of January. Look for the Bruins to handle an undermanned Canadiens team.

NBA pick today: Chicago Bulls -2 over Indiana Pacers (-110), 7:10 pm ET

The Pacers are going through what seems to be their worst stretch of basketball this season with 7 losses in a row. There’s still no news on Tyrese Haliburton coming back, and his absence is the root of all the problems they are having. Andrew Nembhard could also join him on the sidelines due to an illness, which would be another blow to their ambitions in this game.

Chicago has pretty much owned the Pacers over the past 5 meetings, winning 4 of them. Until Haliburton is back, the Pacers shouldn’t be competitive. The Bulls are far more consistent, have the head-to-head edge and are in way better shape injury-wise. I’m taking the Bulls with confidence.
