CAR vs ATL Prediction, Odds and NFL Picks for Sunday, 09/20/26

It will be a showdown in the winless NFC South when the Atlanta Falcons host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon. Yes, what is perennially the worst division in football is off to a combined 0-4 start after Week 1. Carolina's defense got humiliated by Chicago during a 59-37 loss, while Atlanta's offense struggled in a 20-13 loss at Pittsburgh (New Orleans and Tampa Bay also lost). Fortunately for the Panthers, the Falcons' offense won't resemble anything like what the Bears put on the field this past weekend. As such, my Panthers vs Falcons prediction is for the visitors to win and cover.

Against the Steelers, the Falcons amassed 238 yards of total offense (only 118 through the air) and averaged 4.2 yards per play. Third-string quarterback Cooper Rush was under center for the Falcons, whose situation at the most important position in sports will be disastrous again Week 2 regardless of who is running the offense. The only options are Rush, an injured Tua Tagovailoa (probably still out with a back problem), a rusty Michael Penix (has not played since November due to a torn ACL) and undrafted rookie Jack Strand.

Carolina's offense, by contrast, appears to be in midseason form with Bryce Young at the helm. It wasn’t enough against the Bears, but Young torched them to the tune of 361 passing yards and four total touchdowns (one rushing). Anything close to that should be more than enough against Atlanta. The Panthers are 3-0 SU in the last three head-to-head meetings and 6-2 ATS in the last eight.

Scores between these two NFC South rivals have been all over the place in recent seasons. That being said, four of the last seven head-to-head encounters have produced no more than 40 points. Largely due to Atlanta's offense issues, another relatively low-scoring affair could be in the cards. I don't like this market nearly as much as Carolina ATS, but my Panthers vs Falcons prediction is Under 43.5

If they are healthy (and that's a big "if"), the home team has four options at quarterback: Tua Tagovailoa, Michael Penix Jr., Cooper Rush, or Jack Strand. Not a single one inspires any confidence. Fortunately for Atlanta, its defense was outstanding in Week 1. Pittsburgh put up only 20 points and seven of those came following a T.J. Watt interception return for a touchdown. The Steelers amassed just 4.1 yards per play. Count on the Falcons featuring a conservative offense featuring a whole host of handoffs to Bijan Robinson that will keep the clock moving and shorten the game. The under is 7-4 in Carolina's last 11 games dating back to last season and 3-1 in Atlanta's last four. Look for this one to stay under the total.
