The Carolina Panthers will hit the road for the second consecutive week when they travel to Cleveland to play the Browns, who will play in front of their fans for the first time this season. It should be an interesting dynamic considering the Browns are off an unexpected win in Tampa in which Deshaun Watson looked like a semi-capable quarterback after he berated Browns fans for unreasonable expectations prior to being named the starter ahead of the season. My guess is that Cleveland fans will be temporarily pacified by last week’s win over former quarterback Baker Mayfield, but boos will start raining down as soon as the offense missteps.
Watson looked passable last week, but it’s hard to find much confidence in that being a real thing considering what he has consistently put on tape the last few years. Plus, he’s already been sacked seven times this year – tied for third-most nationally. I also am not ready to credit the Browns with actually winning that game against the Bucs as much as I am ready to crown the Bucs for losing it, if that makes sense. Tampa outgained Cleveland, was better on third downs, won the time-of-possession battle and averaged 5.5 yards per carry – that’s usually a winning formula.
The Panthers have been a juggernaut offensively through two games, scoring at least 34 points in each after putting up 31 on the Rams in the playoffs last year. Bryce Young has started to blossom under Dave Canales, and with Chuba Hubbard, Tetairoa McMillan, Jalen Coker and now Darren Waller at his disposal, he has all he needs to take advantage of a Cleveland defense that is 28th in success rate and 24th in EPA per play thus far. Now, Carolina’s defense remains a mystery after giving up nearly 60 points to Chicago before holding Atlanta's offense to just three with a backup quarterback. But I ultimately think Young’s recent play is going to be the difference in this game when the Panthers have the ball.
Panthers vs Browns prediction: Panthers -2.5 (-115) available at time of publishing. Playable to -3 (-125).
