Point Spread Pick

The Colts and the Chiefs enter Week 2 feeling the complete opposite of one another. Many in the sharp sports betting community were compelled by Indianapolis, at home against Baltimore in Week 1 in a spot where they are usually extremely competitive. After all, Jonathan Taylor ran for well over 100 yards per game at home last season (5.6 yards per carry), and it was the start of last season where Daniel Jones and the Shane Steichen-led offense looked like a world-beater.

None of that happened in Week 1. Taylor failed to reach the 100-yard mark (19 carries for 98 yards, still very proficient) and the Colts were whacked 41-23, completely unable to stop Lamar Jackson and his offense. The Ravens dropped a ridiculous 506 yards on a Colts defense that was, at least before the season, projected to perform much better thanks to a few shiny new parts. Daniel Jones and the offense were mediocre, largely struggling to convert when it mattered (3-for-10 on third down) and they only reached the red zone on three occasions.

The Chiefs were the categorical opposite, a team that looked ready to return to its Super Bowl form in 2026. New addition Kenneth Walker III looked right at home, and not just on the field. Last year’s Super Bowl MVP gained 191 total yards, 173 on the ground alone, and on the sidelines the cameras caught him listening to insight and advice from his coaches.

Walker, to say the least, already feels like a massive upgrade for a Kansas City backfield that’s been dying for more continuity the last few seasons. Totaling 31 points and 392 yards, Mahomes and the offense were effective all game, and the KC defense kept Denver, last year’s AFC West champion, to just 176 total yards.

On paper and after what the entire world saw this weekend, it would be hard not to pull the trigger on Kansas City and move on. All data points and perceptions point to a disparate matchup here, particularly since the Chiefs remain at home.

If only it was that simple. When the Colts were starting to devolve and Mahomes was still healthy and fighting for a playoff spot last season, Indianapolis forced overtime at Arrowhead. Kansas City won by 3, despite greatly out-producing their opponent (494-255).

Now it’s the Colts who enter this battle more desperate and they’re getting over a touchdown of points to boot. There is a world where the new-look Chiefs pull away, but we also can’t handicap this matchup based on a one-game sample size, either.

Game Totals PickOver

This total is high, which almost certainly has more to do with the Kansas City Chiefs. Denver was widely regarded as a top-three defense heading into the 2026 season, but they were decimated by Patrick Mahomes and a run-first Andy Reid offense in Week 1. Totaling 220 rushing yards, the Chiefs controlled time of possession (33:42) and the majority of their opening matchup, earning 11 first downs on the ground. Mahomes didn’t have to do as much (172 passing yards), which should be a scary thought for enemy defenses.

It should be particularly scary for the Colts. New names like Charvarius Ward, Arden Key, Jerrie Tillery and Michael Clemons were expected to bring massive upgrades to a Colts’ defense that let them down too many times last season. We didn’t see an inkling of that improvement in their opener.

Like the Chiefs, the Ravens eclipsed 200 rushing yards on Indy in Week 1, achieving 12 first downs on run plays and averaging 5.5 yards per carry. Of course, Patrick Mahomes may not be quite as mobile as he used to be coming off ACL reconstructive surgery, nor is he as speedy or dangerous as Lamar Jackson. That being said, the future Hall of Famer took off for a 15-yard run for their first touchdown of the season and certainly didn’t seem as if he was coming off injury, sacked just twice against last season’s #1 sacking defense.

On the other side, while the Chiefs’ defense looked as formidable as ever, their success was probably partially due to Bo Nix and a new playcaller (Davis Webb) for the Denver defense. Nix looked clumsy and unsure of himself on Monday night. The Chiefs deserve credit for taking advantage, but it was clear the Broncos were not at their best.

Shane Steichen specializes in offense and his group left much to be desired after a 23-point output (and just 251 yards) last Sunday. We doubt the Colts will depend on their defense to correct their woes, so we expect Steichen to have a great game plan heading into Sunday night. That means many points, even over the key number of 47, are more likely to come.
