Football fans are expecting fireworks in this contest, and needless to say, we’re hoping for the same. Two of the NFL’s most talented and popular programs, Buffalo goes cross-country after three straight home games to take on the LA Rams, who just came off a massive win at Philadelphia.
Monday will mark the Rams’ third primetime game in five weeks, so it already feels like we know them better than most teams. We could make a case that Puka Nacua, who returned last week, is the most elite receiver in the NFL. In Week 4, his impact was immediate. The Rams’ offense started slow against a game-ready Philly defense. Eventually, Matthew Stafford’s connection was too good with Puka; the fourth-year player caught nine balls for 125 yards.
Surprisingly, you won’t find many top rankings for the hyper-talented Rams’ offense through four games, but we credit that to extremely difficult opponents and the clunkiness of early-season football. Kyren Williams is their biggest positive, leading a backfield that’s top six in yards per carry (4.8). Regardless, no serious NFL analyst would rank the Rams’ offense anything but well above-average, a group that’s as talent-heavy as any unit in the NFL.
Their defense has stepped up to the plate. Mostly without Myles Garrett, who only played in Week 1, and last week without Aaron Donald, the Rams are still ranked among the best groups in the NFL, ranked top-10 or better in opponent yards, points, third-down conversions and fourth-down conversions. They’re also the NFL’s best unit against QBs, permitting just 4.8 yards per pass. Reports indicate that Donald will return in Week 5. They’ll need every resource to take on arguably the league’s most talented QB.
The hype and electricity surrounding Josh Allen is at an all-time high. Perhaps America’s most lovable QB, the big guy is already putting up insane numbers; over 1,000 yards passing, six passing touchdowns and seven rushing touchdowns in four games. DJ Moore, the offense’s newest addition, has looked decent through four games, but he’s working through a nagging shoulder injury. Last week he only caught one ball for 11 yards. James Cook continues to perform at a high level, third overall in total rushing yards (421). The Bills’ offense leads the NFL with 31.8 points per game.
Last week the Bills’ defense was exposed. Drake Maye, who had looked mostly horrible in three previous outings, picked his way through Joe Brady’s defense, gaining 26 first downs and 405 yards in a win. Ranking outside the top half of the league in every major category, so far there isn’t much that Buffalo’s defense does well. That’s a problem when facing the Rams, the preseason Super Bowl favorite for good reason, led by a QB-HC tandem that’s won together at the highest level.
There are two conflicting elements that prevent us from feeling overly confident on either side of the spread. Buffalo is coming off a humbling loss, their first hiccup of the season. Typically, great QBs and great teams come out firing on all cylinders to avenge this feeling the following week. We consider the Bills a top contender, so we’re counting on a better showing. But the Rams have the clear edge, with virtually no weakness on either side of the ball, and they’re finally back at home after constant travel. They’ll remain in Los Angeles until late October. We’ll take the Rams in what should be an awesome match.
