Giants ready to return to the big time

The football world is ablaze with chatter and excitement following the New York Giants’ dominant win in Week 1. That’s probably partially because it was the Cowboys they whooped. In front of a national audience, Dak Prescott, who owned NYG in his career and was riding a 10-game winning streak, was largely rendered useless. Gaining just 244 total yards and needing penalties to convert first downs on five different occasions, the visitors couldn’t get anything done on the ground (69 yards), either.

The more impressive showing by Big Blue was on the offensive side. Immediately installing what John Harbaugh wants “Giants football” to be, the home team employed a downhill, physical rushing attack that looked more like Army/Navy than it did Cowboys/Giants. In total, New York gained 167 rushing yards at 4.5 yards per rush, which they preferred (37 plays) more than the pass (31). In turn, the Giants controlled the clock (36:40 to 23:20 in time of possession). They also had great success on third downs (8-11), which were now more manageable thanks to the success of the run game.

In brief summation, it looked like a microcosm of something greater, a true era-changing moment for the new-look Giants. Indeed, the same franchise that famously beat the storied Tom Brady-led Patriots twice in the Super Bowl has become a laughing stock over the last decade-plus. Already the Giants present with more professionalism, with an identity, in just one game with Harbaugh at the helm.

Can Super Bowl favorite Rams bounce back?

The Rams completely blew it in Week 1. Deciding to turn it into a quick turnaround trip based on some nefarious research, it turned out Sean McVay’s Rams were far less prepared than their opponents. San Francisco blew away Los Angeles, outgaining the early Super Bowl favorites 379-290. After it was clear San Francisco had more energy and a better plan, they only dominated more as the game went on, shutting down the Rams 17-0 in the second half.

Following that letdown, we learned the Rams will now be without their biggest acquisition, Myles Garrett, who needs knee surgery and was just put on the IR. Needless to say, this isn’t the start the alleged “super team” wanted.

That’s the funny thing about Week 2, though. Much can change. The Rams were the opening Super Bowl favorite for a reason. They’re counting on Aaron Donald making his first start since January 2024.

Giants vs Rams Prediction

The Giants, after an extremely emotional and important win for their franchise, now need to refocus and travel across the country to face an angry Matthew Stafford and company. On paper, and we’ve seen it manifest plenty, the Rams still own one of the most impressive skill groups in the league. We like regression to swing this in favor of the home team in a prime redemption spot.

Giants vs Rams prediction: Rams -7 (-115) available at time of publishing. Playable at that number to -120.

Best BetGame Totals PickOver

This total can go two ways, but the market is telling us its expectations in the number itself. We would understand if this number was 47 or even 46.5. After all, the Giants’ game-plan is clear – run it down their enemy’s throats, control the clock, and prevent their foes from possessing the ball (Dallas only had it twice in the second half of SNF). And it’s not like the Rams’ offense showed an inkling of its potential last Wednesday.

In perhaps the most surprising result of Week 1, the Rams’ offense looked clumsy and anemic in Melbourne. Gaining just 15 first downs and averaging just 5.1 yards per play, much like the Cowboys they were also controlled by their opponents. In fact, the stats of the winners are similar (San Francisco ran for 174 yards and held the ball for 33:50, NYG ran for 176 and held it for 36:40). The Rams also went a putrid 2-of-9 from third down and turned it over twice. In any case, LAR didn’t exactly bestow confidence that their offense is ready to show its best form in game two.

The Giants were also impressive defensively, against a projected top-10 offense.

Still, this remains a high total at 48, one that eclipses many key numbers (38, 40, 41, 46, and 47, to be exact). Why is that?

That’s because the Rams, who are assertive -7 to -7.5 home favorites, are expected to control the pace of this battle, not the Giants. By no means are we saying the Giants are a one-hit wonder. The G-Men showed plenty of reasons for their fans to get excited, including on defense, where they shut down George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb (28 and 44 yards, respectively).

But it’s the Rams who will come out with vengeance after such a poor performance 10 days prior. And the way the Rams run business is diametrically opposite of New York: they’re built on explosive plays.

Giants vs Rams Best Bet

The Giants’ defense looked better, but they don’t know the Rams like the 49ers do. Nor does John Harbaugh, who only faced the Rams once every four years in Baltimore. We like Los Angeles to score immediately, which means the Giants will be chasing. If New York can get to 20, and we think they will, this should soar over 50.

Giants vs Rams prediction: Over 48 (-110) available at time of publishing. Playable to 49.5.
