MIA vs SF Prediction, Odds and NFL Picks for Sunday, 09/20/26

After a trip around the world, the San Francisco 49ers will return home to host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. The Niners looked impressive in their 27-7 win over the Rams in Australia, outgaining them 379-290 while rushing for 5.8 yards per carry and forcing two turnovers. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that they went over there a week in advance to get acclimated to the time change instead of trying to defy time and arrive a day before the game like their counterparts? It was an interesting idea from the Rams in theory, but I think we saw that probably wasn’t the most ideal way to go, especially in Week 1. 

What worked in San Francisco’s favor last week might work against them this Sunday, even if the Niners are at home. I’d imagine there is going to be serious jet lag for the 49ers (and Rams) all week, as they won’t have a bye week to recover from the cross-planet travel. Whose idea was that, anyway? 

The Dolphins’ 27-13 loss to the Raiders in Vegas was not pretty, but they gained 0.9 more yards per play than their opponents, which is at least something for them to hang their hats on, I guess? This offense is severely limited, but it has an element the Rams don’t: a mobile quarterback. Miami is a much different type of offense to prepare for than the Rams, which adds an interesting wrinkle when sandwiched between a pair of divisional games – one of them being on the other side of planet Earth. 

This line is massive. On a normal week, I could see total domination from San Francisco. However, given the circumstances surrounding this game and the exorbitant price, I would have a very hard time betting someone else’s money on the Niners here, let alone mine. I’m going to plug my nose and take the points with the Fins, hoping for an ugly contest.

Dolphins vs 49ers prediction: Dolphins +13.5 (-110) available at time of publishing. Playable to +12 (-110).

The under stands out to me in this game for similar reasons as taking points with the Dolphins. I can’t imagine Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers are going to have the physical stamina to come out swinging against a non-conference team after a cross-planet journey back from their Week 1 game in Australia. Rather, I expect this game to have a heavy dose of Christian McCaffrey and Kaelon Black, as the Niners attempt to control the game via time-of-possession. 

That plays into the hands of Miami. The Dolphins have no issue with making this a slow, run-heavy game. In fact, Miami coach Jeff Hafley has made it clear he wants a team that is strong on the ground, so expect him to shorten this contest with plenty of runs via De’Von Achane and Malik Willis. 

A heavy dose of run plays means a continuous clock and a shortened game, which is an ideal recipe for an under before even adding the travel element. It pales in comparison to San Francisco’s travel, but let’s not forget, it’s Miami’s second straight road game. Look for stalled drives and little scoring in the Bay Area on Sunday afternoon.
