Newcastle’s miserable away record against Arsenal continued with last weekend’s 2-0 extra-time defeat in the FA Cup third round.
The Magpies set out to frustrate the Gunners but they could easily have nicked a win as striker Andy Carroll missed a couple of clear chances before Emile Smith Rowe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored to take the cup holders through.
A similar stifling approach can be expected from Steve Bruce’s side when they return to the Emirates in the Premier League and Arsenal may have to be patient once again.
There are bound to be some weary players in both camps after playing midweek and a low-scoring contest looks likely. However, Arsenal has tightened up in defense, conceding only one goal in the league wins over Chelsea, Brighton, and West Brom and the cup tie against Newcastle, and they have some sprightly attacking threats and a couple of proven goalscorers in Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.
